To the family of Loyal D Hastings, This morning while watching General Conference my youngest son asked me how Conference was shown in Japan. We talked about how they are ahead of us in time and how when I was stationed in Japan all I remember was listening to one Priesthood session. When we returned to watching General Conference again, I began thinking of my time in Japan (1975 to 1977). Then I thought of President Loyal D Hastings. I grabbed my phone and began a search that lead me to this video. Thank you for posting this. I knew him as President Hastings more than Lt Col Hastings. He was called to be President of the Central Honshu Servicemen's District and I was called to be his Executive Secretary. I was a very young Airman stationed at Yokota Air Base. Looking back I was so young, dumb and immature. Let me say, that the years I spent in Japan with President Hastings had a very profound effect on me that is still with me to this day. At the time I had no intention of making the military a career but the personal advice Pres Hastings shared with me, stayed with me for the 21 years I was in the Air Force. It was so simple but profound: he said never let them know you are a member of the church if you plan to compromise your faith. It was him saying to me, be true to your faith. I recall with vivid detail the night I sat in counsel with President Hastings. Two disciplinary counsels occurred that night. Both young men were excommunicated. I remember the words that President Hastings told each person. The first one was contrite and repentant and with tears in his eyes President Hastings announced the decision and admonished the brother to never give up and to repent. The other person was proud and haughty and again with tears running down his cheeks President Hastings announced the decision and turned the brother over to the buffeting of Satan. I had never heard such powerful words before. President Hastings was someone I have always respected. I am sad to learn of his passing. The would be such a better place if we had more like Loyal D Hastings around. Sincerely, M Wayne Williams

I'm sorry that I found Loyal too late to renew acquaintances. We were in the 522nd TFS at Cannon Air Force Base in Clovis, NM from about 1957 to 1960. My best wishes to his surviving family. Doug Colwick [email protected]
