Absolutely brilliant guidance. As someone who's skied over 20 years and very much plateaued (especially since we began skiing with our children) I've decided it's time to invest in some further learning. As I get older confidence has become my main barrier, followed by actually understanding the guidance being given. Your considerate thought on not skiing at a level well beyond those you are training sounds like a fantastic idea; I also very much appreciate the clear and understandable guidance you give in the video - no technical jargon, brilliant. Thank you so much, I thoroughly enjoyed this learning.

Skiing with your feet together helps prevent injury when you hit a rock, at which point skis may go in different directions. The less wide your feet are the best chance of survival. Take ski advice from a proffesional skier NOT from NUTTER like this

Great video, being able to remember what it’s like as a beginner is a real art. I thought of two sports with feet together - spring board diving and some important parts of gymnastics. So both jumping sports where you need air time or “hang” to move the body. So, it makes sense if your style is bounce or you are skiing in the 1980s.

that looked like really good snow. i could have probably skied my hardpack skis on that. i did get a pair of skis that hopefully will ski the crud, slush, and powder really good..

Yes. The mystery of off piste. You got a lot of stuff to think about and a lot of those myths have been what I have been learning. I totally agree with you on getting the right skis and I got skis 100 under foot with lots of rocker and camber and 15m turn radius. I think that is going to be the biggest part of my journey. I will try to watch this again when ski season starts..

I really like what you said about not needing to keep the skis parallel. Step turns are always a useful tool on steep, narrow, off-piste where the first turn can be awkward as hell. Rigid ideas of what you are "supposed" to do can be really limiting!

This video has given us a confidence boost to get back out there and give it a go, this morning. Looking forward to going on a Snoworks Ski Course. Cheers for a top video🙂

Great webinar Phil... love it. One question you might be able to help with... I do ski piste a lot and I'm very used to ski piste. Works very well and my ski boots seem to fit well. Once I enter the deep snow (esp. crop) I get cramps in my feet very fast. Why's that? Any ideas and how I could overcome that?

Well when I hear you need to use force to ski back country, Humm... Well like a lot a skiers on that video Yes you need to push and twist because if you riding in the back sit you will need to use your power to turn! But when you learn to stand center and focus on a good position there is not much more power needed from you all the power from the external force gravity centrifugal force and ... You could ski a groomer or backcountry crud you will still using more the external force. If we talk about the fact that you do not need to be and expert to do backcountry skiing YES, but as long you stay in a reasonably a comfort zone run YES. When you ski properly even on shit snow you do not need to force lot more if you need too it is very minimal with a good stance and rhythm, skiing is like dancing when is done right.

Fantastic in content and presentation style! Many off-piste videos set the wrong expectations for beginners, both in terms of skiing and snow conditions. Kinda like a 500+ week instructor. Better to watch good tutorials, or even better, hire a good instructor

Absolutely. Many people forget beginners can ski off-piste. In the days pre-piste bashers that's what happened. In fact it's easier to snowplough in off-piste than ski parallel. Glad you enjoyed it.

Howdy, Phil. Learning to ski was easy for me. I never grew up. Still haven't. I almost did once and it scared me. I ran away from home when I was 27 and started playing on snowy mountains. I never took lessons. I already knew how to play. I moved to Park City Utah in 1983 to be a full time ski bum. Spiritual Mission. Not the church kind. Code name: Toltec Voodoo. Plan: Ski 7 days a week. Don't take lessons. Don't race. Observe, analyze, absorb, apply. Above all Have Fun. Born a Dancing Fool, still am. I don't look to ski heroes for Inspiration. I look to Dancers. When I ski I envision myself to be the Runaway Love Child of Fred Astaire, MC Hammer, and Elvis. Substitute Tom Jones for Elvis if you like. Sir Tom does the job quite nicely. My goal is not to demonstrate my technique, but to make it Invisible. I danced on alpine gear for 3 years, Telemark gear for 30 years, and I've been dancing on alpine gear for the last 5 years for my encore. Unicycle? Made me laugh. I suggest it to other skiers as a fun way to improve balance. My best friend's Dad built one when we were kids. We lived on a steep hill and took turns riding that thing all over the place. No doubt it helped my skiing. Pogo Stick? Yes. Every kid had one when I grew up. Highly recommended. Movement, balance, pressure control, rhythm. Below, Emma gives a tutorial on how to ride a Pogo Stick. It's movement and task oriented. Most ski instructors could learn a lot about teaching from her. Master Emma kzbin.info/www/bejne/i4jdm5iXa52Xd6s Fear of Failure Bad? Yes. Vital Importance of the Right Word? Yes. Dead End nature of most current ski instruction? Yes. Parallel Turns? Hmmm. An Illusion. Most dynamic skiing looks parallel, but it's not in detail. Kids Rock? Yes. Signature Demonstration? Home Run. Your Enthusiasm and Attitude? Home Run. Great Job, Phil. I know you'd be a Hoot to ski with, and we'd have a lot to talk about. Managing how the mind interacts with the body is the core of Toltec Voodoo. Glad to see you've recovered from Growing Up. Very few do. Cheers. Bonus Link. Moving. Telemark Skiing. Utah, 1980s kzbin.info/www/bejne/r4m5oWCQq5mlaKM
