Interesting. My 007/777 blend green is in it's 3rd season and I saw dramatic improvement throughout July and August in how well it withstood the tremendous heat and humidity. We had 13" of rain in July and 20 consecutive days of mid 90's temps with excessive humidity. My 2 year old green would have lost a lot of density but the 3 year old stand held up.

Thanks for the comment Jeff. Your observation is very much in line with ours for it was the 3rd season (or sometimes I like to word it falls, for the maturing process I feel kicks in a higher level during fall months) the maturity kicked in. I think there are exceptions ie PureDistinction as an example will "mature" quicker being so aggressive. There are trade-offs!

@@dandturf yes I think the same way with regards to fall. It seems crazy to many of my fellow superintendents to build a home green when I have 20 greens at my course but they're old push up greens and I wanted to test out a sand based green. The 007/777 blend has done a great job suppressing poa at my course which is why I chose it. My home green is 1,250 square feet so it's not a huge task but I enjoy it. There are soo many variables to maturation but it comes down to patience. Golfers don't have it but I do for my home green. I was able to slowly reduce the HOC over 3 seasons to .135". Seems to be a sweet spot. The sand based rootzone is only 8" deep but I get zero rounds per year so it's more than enough!

Wow I just found this video! Seeing that this information is 3 years old, are there any new updates? Or Websites to go to for more information or findings?

what's the best way to tell when the bentgrass network is extensive enough and its time for grooming and vertical mowing. interested in knowing when to begin building that mat layer

I am using Penncross Bentgrass for my front lawn in NYC andi plan on having it at a height of 4 inches and higher most of the summer and under three when it's almost time for winter, now is having this kind of grass a tall heights and not under 1/2 inch would the grass become so healthy that at even tall heights they will link up or must this grass be short for that to work?
@dandturf5 жыл бұрын
bentgrass in lawns do best mowed short. I would try to get the mower set near 1/2 to 3/4"
@shangrilaladeda5 жыл бұрын
I understand that but I have to compete with weeds because most of my neighbors have weeds and I just talked to one neighbor to possibly take care of their lawn. So what you are telling me if Bentgrass is high it’s not any good or over time will it get better? I like the way it looks growing tall just not sure if Bentgrass is able to do that like other kinds of grass. There is also not much foot traffic on my lawn anyway besides some cats, birds and small animals.

@@shangrilaladeda most home lawn weeds will be suppressed at the low mowing. Poa is an exception. Mowing high bent often gets thatchy, lays over. If you want to mow a lawn at the height you mention other grasses would perform better over time

dandturf ok thank you I will try if it doesn’t work maybe I will get a new grass I just dug up my yard and replaced the dirt of I change out the Bentgrass I won’t have to do that again right? Just take off the top layer and replace that dirt and lay down the seed.

This is my favorite club by far in the Chicago area. It has a different flair to it, more private than others

Interesting but no surprise here! Course supervisors should take notice...
