I am really confused by the story of the night journey.the only verse in the Quran that alludes to this is 17:1.It talks about the prophet being taken for a night journey from Masjid al-Haram in Kaaba to Masjid al-Aqsa in Jerusalem.There is a real historical problem here.Kabba by then was full of idols and hadn't yet been conqeured by the Muslims and there was no Masjid al-Aqsa yet in Jerusalem as it was conquered by the Muslims well after the prophets death,and it was Hz Umar who built the first mosque there in 636 AD,at the site where the Jewish temple had been destroyed and reduced to a rubble.Masjid al-Aqsa as we know it was expanded from the Mosque of Umar by the Caliph Abd-al-Malik ibn Marwan in 685AD and was finished by 705 AD,several years after the night journey had supposedly happened.This verse is clearly talking about a Masjid al-Aqsa that was already inexistence at the time of the Prophets' night journey,which happened around 621AD i.e a year before the Hijra.How do you address this contradiction? I think the journey was just a dream,or the story was a later addition after Muslims had conquered both Persia and Jerusalem

del catraz There is no historical problem, the Masjid ul Haram at that time was simply an open space around the Kabah- and a Masjid linguistically means a place of prostration- there is no need for a physical building to exist for a place to be designated a Masjid, so just as the Masjid ul Haram was a wide open space so too was Masjid ul Aksa.

these are just clever explanations....i would really like you to give me your reference for the meaning of Masjid at that time..how come then the Quraysh in their interrogation asked the Prophet how many doors the Masjid had and to describe it (other than the description of Jerusalem) and doesn't it bother you that this story is strikingly similar to the heavenly journey made by Arda Viraf of Persia some centuries earlier?

There is no contradiction, the Al Aqsa already existed as a temple, read the chapter, the temple was called a Masjid.
