I have a 5.0 mercruiser that has a new raw water and circulation pump and it recently started to overheat when at home with the rabbit ears. It ran good on the water.

Yes, it was the impeller causing overheating and an easy fix. The alternator was causing the squeaking. I took the alternator to the shop and 100 bucks latter were told the alternator' was "good' Finally replaced the alternator as last resort, it was not a good alternator. I ended up selling the boat. Wish I did not sell it now.

Is it prohibited to show how you took it out?

Those out drives do not pick up well on rabbit ears. The white smoke is the rubber from your impeller melting.

i am having an overheating imtermittent problem and am wodering if a piece of impeller is blocking flow? suggestions on how to clear a engine block free of impeller pieces?
@tannermontana937 ай бұрын
Did you get it figured out ?

Where did all the pieces that broke off the impeller go? Could they be blocking water flow?
@RobTaylorRTP6 жыл бұрын
There were some in the output hose. Part of the problem with this outdrive/engine is that you can't use muffs on the outdrive and expect to keep impellers in good condition. Changing the impeller and ONLY USING THE BLUE FLUSH intake for "testing" and running out of the water is the the key to success.
@MrJeepsterman5 жыл бұрын
the blue flush hose isn't meant to be used with the motor running
@11TGUN5 жыл бұрын
MrJeepsterman on the VP it is. I spoke to my local VP manufacturer about this exact question. On the Mercs you can’t use the flush tube bc it doesn’t push water through the impeller. However in the VP, the flush tube is able to be used due to the way the system is designed to feed water through the raw water pump/impeller.

@@11TGUN depending on the year. I should correct my statement. Early 00's not a motor running
@11TGUN5 жыл бұрын
@@MrJeepsterman That definitely could be true. They said it was no issue for my 07' so I didn't ask any other questions about prior generations.

I have a 1973 westerner and it will overheat in warmer lake water. What do you think my problem is?
@outattheisland6 жыл бұрын
Check the impeller for your raw water pump that is bolted to the harmonic balancer. If your boat has a closed cooling system flush out the heat exchanger. Most likely it’s your raw water pump.

i am having the same problem, have you found the problem?
@RobTaylorRTP6 жыл бұрын
Tahoetom1977 - yes - new impeller fixed it. Using muffs on this engine doesn’t work very well. Pressure isn’t strong enough to get all the way up to the impeller. Try testing with blue hose flush connection after changing your impeller.
@Tahoetom19776 жыл бұрын
Rob Taylor thanks for your reply. When we connect house water to blue fitting, the engine runs cool, no alarm. Guess that’s because we are bypassing impeller. Local shop replaced the impeller 16 months ago. Think we should replace entire pump instead of rebuilding again?
@jensenleblanc6 жыл бұрын
Is the water pump functioning? Usually there is a lot more water flowing down instead of coming back out the outdrive “earmuffs”.
@RobTaylorRTP6 жыл бұрын
No - impeller needing changing. Results of using muffs on a VP DPS-A Drive. Impeller is too high up the water line, and can't pull the water that far, even with these and other recommended muffs. If you want to run this boat engine out of water, I recommend NEVER using the muffs. Just connect to the blue hose port on the side of the engine, and test there. Otherwise, you will burn impellers FAST. After changing the impeller TWICE, I figured this out finally.
