I don't like the way she kisses him. It's kinda rough like she claims to kiss him. It's supposed to be a gentle and romantic kiss, to show Lucy's nature.

Look, to those who doesn’t know: Sally Bowles is NOT meant to be agood singer. Ever since the original 1966 they cast singers and ask them to not perform in their original voices when they cast Sally Bowles. Yes, Molly is not doing a great voice, but that is the point. Now, can we all move on?

I had the good fortune of seeing her (and Robert) in J&H on Broadway in 1997. She was amazing, as was he. The whole time I couldn't help but think about all the times I saw her on Star Search on television and now I was seeing her live on Broadway. It was a bit mind-blowing for me as it was my first time in NYC and my first Broadway show. A wonderful memory.

I love seeing costume differences and they sure did build a whole new set for Molly. I think Molly's dress here definitely gives it more of a little girl vibe with the almost empress waistline (nearly, but not quite) and the cap sleeves. The bow placement in her hair is completely different too. Interesting stuff, that.

i think the reason that they keep casting celebrities who don’t have “broadway” voices is 1. to get more people to come see the show and fall in love with it and 2. bc it works. sally isn’t supposed to have an amazing voice. many people fail to realize that the stage version is much different than the movie version in that, yes, sally is a glamorous person but she works at a night club where people do not care if you sing well or not. do i think that molly is the best stage version of sally bowles even though i absolutely adore her? no. i much prefer jane horrocks’s sally bowles but then again i’ve never seen an actual stage version. it’s all about preference!

Also bear in the mind at this point in the narrative, she has just dumped her fiancé, lost the flat they shared together and is, in all likelihood, experiencing the induced miscarriage from the abortion she had. In the background of all this, we know from history that the Cabaret scene that has sustained Sally for so long is on the verge of being shut by a Nazi party about to assume power. Her whole world is crumbling before her while she has to sing this song of how life is carefree and easy She’s probably on the verge of a breakdown at this point All of this combined with the fact that, from the outset, Sally is meant to be an average singer at best, which is why she’s the leading act in a seedy bar, not one of the darlings of the scene. Liza had to be able to belt it out to make the film a commercial success. Her Sally was one that had the talent that lacked the ambition. Sally was meant to be the opposite of that

OMG - I was in the process of sorting through old cassettes, deciding if I should keep, donate or replace with a CD. This let me to KZbin, where I found this wonderful clip. I was the properties master for this show. It was filmed for A&E in conjunction with Miss Clairol at the Frauenthal Theatre in Muskegon, Michigan. Oh, the memories! I even kept a fake ice cube from this show. I learned how to make fake chocolate ice cream for Susan Moniz, I fell in love with John Herrera, and was in awe at the amazing scene and costume changes. To this day, this show has the quickest costume change I ever had the pleasure of having to assist with. Good times.

The summer I had planned was to be relaxing to the nth degree Lounging in a hammock Catching up on my reading Sipping from a glass of cold chablis No minor traumas No major headaches All my weekends free So will someone please explain Why I'm under such a strain God, would you look at me All keyed up Can't unwind Night and day you're on my mind How did I end up here? Can't sit still Can't think straight Can't recall which meals I ate Damn you, am I losing weight How did I end up here? My nerves are all a jangle Emotions in a tangle I'm underneath a cloud and overwrought Do you know how it feels to be head over heels having you in my every thought I was fine Doing swell Everything was going swell Now it's all been shot to hell Can't someone volunteer How did I end up feeling like this on the edge of an abyss Out of sorts and in a stew Why is it I'm Spending my time Teasing Taunting Testing you Falling fast Can't hold out Filled with hope and plagued with doubt Hardly know what I'm about I've got it real severe I tremble when you're near I am in love That's clear But somehow I got left here stranded Wanting you and empty handed How did I end up here?

I love her as an actress but her voice is not good enough for Broadway. Plz stop casting Hollywood film actors (Molly, Emma, Michelle, Brooke, Lea) in this role!!! It doesn’t work. It needs to be played by amazing singers who can make their voices sound unrefined-not by people who actually can’t sing shouting & screeching.

Sally isn't supposed to be a great singer. That's the point; that's why she is singing at a sketchy club. The stage show is different than the movie. I believe the not perfect singing was intentional

mags med I disagree. And hate this argument. I’ve seen the stage show when it was cast with an amazing singer, Andrea Goss. IMO it was as it should be. Sally is supposed to be a good singer but not amazing enough for stardom. Even still the songs in the show are extremely difficult for someone who can’t sing. Stage Sally does not have a perfect voice but you certainly need an extremely talented singer to pull that off.

At this point in the stage production she has just been told by her future fiancé to basically “f*** off I’m going back to America.” But sally wants to stay. So this is her emotions portrayed through the song that’s why it sounds sketchy and off because of her mental state. From an audience perspective you feel sorry for her and understand her emotions through the song. Remember as well it’s part of the character and sally isn’t meant to be a great singer like it was mentioned before. So, I think this is a perfect example of sally that has been well thought-out and portrayed very well.

The thing I love about Linda's performance/portrayl of Lucy is that it's honest. There's nothing super choreographed or precise about it, which is how all characters in musicals should be approached. She gives Lucy a vulnerability, which is lovely because at the end of the day, Lucy doesn't know what she wants for herself. She just knows she wants better, but she doesn't know how to get to that point. I hate how the Lucy's who came after her do the exact same choreography because it doesn't come from a place of genuine emotion. It feels put on, fake, and forced. That's why Linda is the best.
@ladyjennyanytime5195

Thats because producers with a show thats a hit , think for its continued success they have to lock actors performances in and have them emulate exactly whoever originated the role without any flexibility in the blocking. Which is why it can wind up looking false and unauthentic to the character. I totally get what you mean, if you compare Linders performance to Colleen, nothing wring with Colleens voice , in fact I think she suits it more as she's younger imo, but the blocking for her is waaaay OTT in places and like you said it comes off as fake. If only Directors and Producers trusted the actor more and gave them a little bit of freedom of interpretation more. Hal Prince was a master of this on both Evita and Phantom with his leading performers that worked on those shows attesting for his methods since he passed. Not all Directors/Producers are like him tough unfortunately.
