This guy is amazing and expresses what I struggle EVERYDAY! As a current PIMA adult student, prior military myself, I cannot stand all this push for online discussion posts where I am forced to waste time interreacting with other students. I don't care about other students. I just want to do MY work and be left alone. Stop forcing us that are different to socialize, all it does is break our brains, makes us uncomfortable and is just a waste of time for us. Give us the nuts and bolts and tell us to get our tasks done and leave us be unless we ask for something.

I also export the Gradebook and build spreadsheets for discussions. Every time I reply to an initial post, I highlight that cell next to the student’s name. This way I can easily keep track of who I’ve replied to, who hasn’t posted, and see how my workload progresses during the week. Good stuff. I’ve never missed a student since starting this. I wasn’t aware that the # of faculty posts changed last year. Good to know. I’m just continuing posting to all students who replied to me, as well as offer more resources that address the topic. The 3-stage process is made more difficult in low enrollment classes. It’s much more challenging. My students acknowledge announcements primarily because I ask them to “Please leave comments below” for each announcement. That often prompts students to join into the conversation, share their takeaways from the announcement, and give me feedback on the announcements’ quality. I get a lot of interaction that way, not necessarily with Ashford but in other schools I teach for that also use Canvas. This is especially helpful when I conduct live sessions and students watch the recording and then share their takeaways. It also helps generate discussions when grading assignments. (But not in Waypoint because students can’t leave comments to our grading…as far as I know.) Interesting perspective on asking students to read all posts before replying themselves. I purposely don’t do this, because in my own case, I don’t want to be affected by bias by reading others’ thoughts before presenting my own. In fact this exact issue came up last week, when 2 students discussed the same article when they could have discussed other available articles. In that case, the 2nd student told me she would have picked a different article. However, since both initial posts gave different perspectives of the same article, in this case that scenario worked out very well. But I do understand the scaffolding effect when students build on what’s already been posted and move the conversations (hopefully) deeper. I like that “My 2 cents” approach. I usually do this within my posts. But having it as a standalone post, might be visually more inviting and grab students’ attention. Good idea! Like that idea of making the greeting in red names. That will definitely catch students’ attention. Think I’ll try this… Visuals and images are a HUGE way to attract students. I get a lot of feedback on that. (And sometimes even students post their own images as well…) Going back to the spreadsheet as a DQ tracker, I’ve also added students’ personal info that they shared during the Introductions forum, to those spreadsheets. I’ll note if the student is military, what their profession is, what their interests are, etc. This helps me immensely further down in the course, as I reply to each student’s by making them more personalized and meaningful. Eg, “Just like in the business you and your husband run, we need to…” or make an analogy. “This concept is like hiking trails in CO: you just have to stick with it…” Things like that. Those spreadsheets really are great tools. Humor is huge, when used prudently in the classroom. My motto is, “better lighthearted than heavy-handed.” Students pick up on this and appreciate it…they’ve told me. Thanks for reading.

Very useful briefing regarding Waypoint. Sadly, the update was one step forward and two steps back. "Waypoint Classic" and user set defaults would be great options. Thank you for a most helpful video!

I enjoyed watching this webinar. I was surprised to learn that 50% of doctoral students drop out before the proposal stage. I also found the residency sessions most helpful when I was pursuing my doctorate degree. Academic writing is certainly is a key component to college success. I think it is better to reach out to the writing center as early as possible in any degree program. M. McDermott
