Yes, it wasn't my FAVORITE racing games, NFS Underground takes that spot. But it WAS a close second. Reasons are I have a large JDM bias. But I think you are missing why everyone is hyped, It is because after so long of AAA studios shoveling out massive but broken and undercooked games, this game is returning from the ashes with a pretty paintjob and promising to do exactly what the last game did excellently. It is not trying to reinvent itself for "modern audiences".

I mean, a poorly received game in the United States doesn't mean that it's a bad game, the same way that games that aren't released in United States are bad. I have followed the Tokyo Xtreme Racer franchise since it debuted state side on the Sega Dreamcast, and with the exception of the Drift Games which were part of a different franchise, the game style and direction were consistent. Unfortunately it didn't get the attention in the United States that other franchise that were pushed, like EA Blackbox Need for Speed games, Burnout, and Midnight Club, and I'm sure that gate keeping from journalists and misunderstanding of mechanics played a lot into it. All of that said, I'm happy with the game as it currently is, but I worry that Genki may have shot themself in the foot with doing the early access and being able to maintain the hype. For a customer like me, the game is great. I hope that more comes from it, and I hope that others will give it an honest chance.

I respect you taking the time to write all of this and I have not even played this game yet, I am just tired of the youtube farmers that will hype this game up when In fact these games have a horrible history. I feel as if I am doing a service and I hope that you can go into this game with no bias and see for yourself. We will see how this goes and I will be downloading it and playing today with a review.
