WCBS was a radio station in Springfield, IL. Columbia's New York station was...WABC, for the Atlantic Broadcasting Company, which CBS owned. This made it uncomfortable for CBS when the American Broadcasting Company started in 1945. Getting the Springfield station to give up it's call letters took time, a little money and some help from the FCC. Eventually, WCBS would get assigned to Channel 2, AM 880 (now gone) and FM 101. WABC would eventually make it to channel 7, AM 770 and FM 95.5 (now gone) and it's old calls, WJZ, would transfer to Westinghouse in Baltimore.
