For a small area like this I would suggest using a small roller to spread the thinned compound evenly. Once done then use your brush or sponge to replicate the texture. Practice on some scrap drywall or cardboard before to match as close as possible too

When you load your brush you need to work the mud into the brush by bumping it in a empty bucket first then bump it on the ceiling. Also roll you mud on the ceiling in one direction then roll it in the other direction that way it levels out the compound so you will not have thick and thin spots.
