11 years ago, I was having a conversation with my very elderly host father on my study abroad semester in Kyoto. my Japanese was never great, and he didn't speak any English, but we had some interesting conversations about Japanese culture, society, and his life. one day he was urging me to go check out an exhibit at the local Ritsumeikan University art museum which, I was able to ascertain, was focused on the work of his mother, Hisako Kajiwara. Hisako was a niche but known artist who painted in a traditionalist art style known as Bijin-ga, but was considered very progressive for using that medium to depict the lives of women from more quotidian or lower-class corners of society. over time, a need for money led her to conform more closely to the established standards of the genre, which was focused on elegant, high-class women. my host father showed me a book of his mother's art. it was fascinating and I was rapt, but I nearly lost my mind when he turned the page and I saw this album cover. I don't know that I have ever experienced a moment of language barrier more profound than trying to explain the prior connection between me and that painting, but I showed him the album in my music app and he was floored that I was familiar, even unknowingly, with his mother's work. it was an unbelievable moment, and as I listen to this song for the first time in a while, that feeling came back to me. I first heard this album almost 14 years ago and the whole thing, and this song especially, remains very close to my heart. this song in particular led me to discover Harry Hosono, who is now one of my all-time favorite artists himself.

This is one of those albums that you need to play from start to finish. No dipping in/out, it's all or nothing...

Literally five years old comment says it. And a 9 months old comment mentions Matsuri studio.

One of my favorite bands, one of my favorite records. I’ll never forget the 2006 Kexp reunion show. It makes me so sad that I’ll never experience that again.

I have their albums on CD tucked away somewhere safe but I've been looking for them to populate on a streaming service, unfortunately they never did. An amazing band! It's good to hear them again. I always wished they would have started another band. Same with the band Houston.
