I live on Poets Road just a few doors up from where the Dalston Synagogue was located. It was sadly demolished in 1970 and a council housing block replaced it. I have been living on Poets Road since 1988 but only recently discovered that my father (who died in 1971 when I was a child), his may siblings, my grandfather, and my great parents.... all lived in a road just a mile from Poets Road going as far back as the 1880's. To think they probably attended Dalston Synagogue and possibly heard Jacob Koussevitzky sing prayers therein is quite extraordinary!

some yeas go, Hashem showed me who I really was. A friend lent me the video "The Jazz Singer" with Neil Diamond, I was watching and and it came to the part when he sang Kol Nirei, I had my dinner on my lap. I listened when I started to shake violently, I tried to stop but I still was unable to stop.

I play this and it reminds me of listening to Al Jolson with my family singing on the radio when I was young. This recording is fabulous and priceless.

I am not sure if this 1947 version or his Jazz Singer version from 1927 is better. But the Jazz Singer version is a masterpiece. This one is close. The Jazz Singer version with only a male accompaniment is more genuine.

Mine too. IMO nobody does the Kol Nidre better than Jolson.
