Good morning do the 12v circuit breakers have a connection direction? I have one between my battery and my converter and one between my solar charger and my battery and I'm wondering about the direction of connection... thank you
@sotasolarКүн бұрын
Not that I’m aware of. For batteries power flows both ways so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@BryantFarris2 күн бұрын
The 100/50 has a max input of 60 amps at 100v, and output of 50 amps at either 12v or 24v, Hope that helps clear confusion. 50 amps x 14v = 700 watts 50 amps X 28v = 1400 watts Over panel all you want, it will only output so much. But you are 1 increasing the max time with max amps to battery bank, and 2 also placing more stress/ heat on your charge controller in the form of resistance as it will control the charge the battery is getting.

The BMS has shutdown and needs resetting, you can't charge the battery if the BMS won't pass through the charge regardless. It has to be opened to get the BMS disconnected and get a direct connection to the battery.

Hey Shawn, I'm building (well I guess rebuilding) the inverter setup in my RV, so timely video. Love your work as always. I'm curious, with your neutral wiring on the MP's, did you just double land a small jumper wire between the two neutrals and grounds between the inverters? It was hard to tell from the video. I was going to pull the neutral and grounds together in a couple of polaris taps and run that to each inverter. Six of one, half dozen of another?

Yes I double landed. Doing that way would work as well.

Been following the channel for some time and I like the attention to fusing. Have you seen fuses blow? What have been those circumstances?
@sotasolar8 күн бұрын
Only time we’ve seen them blow is for particularly large RV roof ACs can pop a 400a fuse in the Lynx. In that case we went to a 500a . It’s a bit oversized, but we had 4/0 cabling and customer understood the risks. Other than that? No. Other than accidental stuff.

Wow, super system. We live off-grid in our coach FT with only half of that inverter power. 29.6kwh worth of 48v battery power is fantastic - and affordable too when made from prismatic cells. I did the same thing but a little smaller (23.5kwh), but I have an older coach so was fighting a space/weight limit. Really professional install too - well thought out custom layout. I don't think those batteries will ever get below 30% if you've got enough solar on the roof. Mine don't. My wife gave my tool a name; does that count? I think you need to cut back on that magic smoke some, my friend. BTW, I like to eat frogs - tastes like chicken!

We've got one more battery to put in so it will be near 45kw of battery. Yes plenty for any adventure. We'll end up with 2500w of solar hopefully. Thanks for checking in.

@@sotasolar Holy Cow! That's massive. What is that, close to 600lbs worth of batteries? They will never be without power though. I'm thinking about removing my generator to save the 200+ lbs. because I never run it anymore and I only have 1/2 the storage capacity they have. Now you've got me thinking. I could remove my generator and install another 320ah, 48v battery like I have now, adding another 16.4kwh of battery capacity with no weight penalty. Decisions, decisions.

Would it be cheaper to use server rack batteries? Or would it be too much vibration? Thanks Don
@sotasolar8 күн бұрын
Each one of these batteries is almost equivalent to 3x of the server racks. Cost would be a little more overall. I think in this case the form factor fit the use case so well. It was hard to choose anything else. I don’t think we’d have been able to get 9 server rack batteries in there.

I have a 6 month old Renogy Smart 200A that had issues from new, would get to around 25% to 20% most times then just turn off, you can reboot it by applying voltage, for a second then see via bluetooth one of the cells was low voltage 2.5V other 3 were 2.7V, after some time Renogy refunded the money and I kept the battery, it was a good design because you could simply unscrew it completely, the BMS was on top and everything was accessible, It has 8 cells in 4P/4S, the 2nd set of Parallel cells has lower voltage so I suspect a faulty cell, problem is the cells are laser welded to the busbars so not easy to remove the faulty cell but probably doable with a multitool, other problem is I cannot find cells the same physical size, they are 105A cells but everything I can find is too high, so can't simply put a new cell in there
@sotasolar9 күн бұрын
You can try adding an extra balancer inside, also using the lab power supply to manually balance it. But yes a cell is likely bad.
@-PORK-CHOP-4 күн бұрын
@ Good idea, I will keep looking for the right sized cell, I'm sure it's jus one of the cells causing the issue, it works faultlessly if charged to 100% down to around 15% then random cut off.
@-PORK-CHOP-9 күн бұрын
I hate the way these batteries are not serviceable by simply unscrewing the top cover, it's easy enough to have a rubber / silicon seal in there that keeps them watertight, I understand it makes manufacturing easy but if you have a simple problem like this one you cannot simply reset the BMS, and a normal consumer would end up sending the battery to a recycle yard when it's perfectly ok.

Have a question on panels. How do the renogy rsp250dct compare to the rich solar 250 watt? Getting new rv the end of April and what to install a 24v system. Thank you, Ken
@sotasolar11 күн бұрын
Good question. So far, Renogy only makes them in 12v / 22VOC varieties. Vs Rich Solar makes the 24v / 45VOC version. WE like the Higher voltage versions because with 2 panels in series we can get to 85-90 volts, vs 4 panels from Renogy, 4 panels in series is bad on an RV roof. This lets us run so much more power more efficiently. Or if you want to run all panels in parallel, you're running at 38-40 volts which is much more efficient than 18-19 of Renogy. With just 1 or 2 panels I'm not sure it's a huge deal.

So then under a mixed battery system like this do you have your charger / solar charger set to lithium ? or Sealed lead acid ? or AGM, ??? I find this video very interesting, Currently now I am running AGM solar Vmax batteries but adding a lithium batter to my system might be interesting.
@sotasolar10 күн бұрын
I'd set for AGM. You don't want to cook the electrolyte from the AGM with lithium's 14.6 absorb voltage. However, lithium will still charge 100% at 14-14.4v .

Again great video. Question on the balancer. I have a 24v victron system and I'm using 6 12v lithium batteries paired up to get 3 24 batteries. Ive thought of getting a balancer for my set up. Would it require 1 for each set of batteries or can I reconfigure my wiring to use just one?
@sotasolar14 күн бұрын
There is an example in the Manual that diagrams your exact setup. - www.victronenergy.com/upload/documents/Manual-Battery-Balancer-EN.pdf . Only change I would make is to use fusing or thermal breakers in between your mid point connections. These are what I'd use. amzn.to/4hcnSM7 We did this on a 24v Install this summer. You want circuit protection on the midpoints because IF a battery goes into a low voltage cutoff before others, significant the current would then potentially flow from the smaller midpoint connections potentially exceeding the ampacity of the wire and causing a fire. Also, if you're using a smart shunt, add in the mid point monitoring (aux pin) this will let you know how out of balance you may be. Balance issues only show up near full charge (14+v). Great question.

I’ve got one of the 460Ah Epoch batteries and have been very happy with it. Be sure and set all charging sources to 13.9 Absorption and 13.4 float to prevent the batteries from going into “full charge protection”, which happens if the amps are low and the voltage goes over 14. It happens once fully charged and connected to shore power if you use the default Victron charge profile. In full charge protection, they completely turn off, as if the batteries were completely removed, which means they won’t support the 12V loads, and your voltage will fly all over the place since the MultiPlus in float is trying to support the loads. Just a little quirk with the Epoch BMS, but once you know it, you can adjust for it. Downside is Victron makes you buy a $70 dongle just to interface with your PC and make the adjustment, instead of giving you a USB plug right on the unit. You’ll need to adjust the solar charge controllers as well to under 14. Bulk charge will remain over 14 but that’s not an issue since the amps are high.
@sotasolar17 күн бұрын
Yes that is a quirk of the Epoch 460s . I did see there is a new firmware out for the batteries and a new 460ah version of the battery.
