A negative SAI means you will be eligible for 100% financial need aid. That doesn’t mean you’re going to get it, but it means you’re eligible. The school gets to decide how much they want to help you with. This will depend on the value of you as a student. Even the most generous schools only meet need at 80%.

It is confusing! The Fafsa simplification Act that went in for last year has made a disaster of Financial Aid and the FAFSA. For 2025/26 school year, the FAFSA will be opening for the masses December 1. That was announced by the department of education in mid August 2024. There will be a very limited opening October 1, but I do not recommend because there will be errors and mistakes, and FAFSA will need to be updated. This process is frustrating enough without having to go back and redo it several times!

If your SAI is zero, it means you’re eligible for 100% Financial Aid. You’ll likely get a Pell grant. The school that you ultimately attend get to decide on how much help they wanna give you. If you are not an academic scholar or someone who could value the school, they don’t have to help you at all reach out to the financial aid officer at the school you wish to attend and find out how much they’ll help you with.

You mention "based on mom and dad" but we are divorced and it's my understanding that FASFA only counts the parent who has most financial responsibility and doesn't even count the other parent. And that's even if the other parent is required to pay half of the tuition based on the child custody agreement.

You are correct! For divorce parents, the financial information is required of the parent predominantly responsible for finances, or who claims the child on their tax return.
