ETA: in light of the theme that the adults are the ones acting like children, I now realize that not "using our words"- ie. explaining the situation- is exactly how children respond to a dispute and jump into a fight. It was part of the satire. I shoulda known better! 🤪 Original comment: Not sure why John didn't ask how the fracas started or why the other father didn't immediately tell him. But I still enjoyed it. Love Fitzgerald. Thanks

Except the Chassidim, they Dont think like that, they look Back to the earlier rebbes and the alter rebbes, but otherwise, yeah ur basically right. Its funny too cos humanity doesnt really seem to want to progress forward to better humanity, but stay the same : same violemt warmongering species that cant get along w others or take personal responsibility cos it's always someone else's fault and problem to fix.

Not everyone is born rich, not all wealthy people think they are better than others. We worked, we struggled and made a solid Iife. We get to share experiences with some of our family and friends would never have the opportunity to. So it’s a balance, money isn’t an issue a tool nothing more.

Queen Isabella died in 1504. Martin Luther had not nailed his 95 theses on the door until 1517. The Reformation had not even begun when Queen Isabella and Ferdinand booted Islam from Spain after many many years of intense fighting. Fighting to regain what the Moors had invaded upon. If Isabella and Ferdinand and the people had not resisted they would be living under Sharia Law.

Goodness. I listen to your videos nearly every single day. Of course some of them I listen to again and again. Mostly there is one A.I. generated narration voice I like a lot and that is the one used here That is why I listen to Sommerset Maugham repeatedly. I have enjoyed immensely these lovely story times. The author is WRONG, however, on his thoughts about the Moors in Spain. The Moors practiced Islam as their religion. Christianity reached Spain long before any qibla faced Mecca. There are some historians (based on new evidence) who believe that there probably isn’t much truth to the standard Islamic narrative. Jay Smith, Al Fadi Hatun Tash are some who come to my mind. In any case I know that Sommerset Maughams stories are fiction however sometimes he seems to state some thoughts as if they are facts. Usually in the beginning of his stories. I don’t know why I am commenting so long in this case. I guess it just got me to thinking. I love world history so certain comments envoke a response from me lol Thank you for all the hard work you put in to making traveling nicer and bedtime too. I so look forward to when I can relax and enjoy a well read story.

I just finished reading Mary Trumps memoir...that is mostly about her childhood. It has a common theme with this story by Hardy...family duty, patriarchal male attitudes, and projection of personal power outward onto others. The son in this story is an obnoxious, jumped up snob. But the mother is equally annoying to me as the martyrish victim. Patriarchy tells women they must sacrifice themselves for others. And it tells men they have they have the right to demand obediance and servitude from women. Utter nonsense. Im so glad that more and more women are beginning to rebel and to pursue their own happiness with impunity. But its alarming to read that some modern women such as Mary, are still caught in families who give up so much personal power to a patriarch -- Fred Trump, in Marys familys case. It comes down to a simple decision, "Is it more important what others think of me, or pursuing my own ( basically harmeless) happiness without guilt.

Anyone who has ever been to Salisbury Plain knows it was never a “desolate expanse”. It has seen regular human occupation for many millennia, and although sparsely populated in parts, is certainly not desolate or bleak!
