Something interesting, experimenting with moon light I’ve found it is a cold light opposite to the warmth given by the sun. Objects exposed to moonlight will be colder than objects shaded from it. For example if you have 2 cups of water, one directly in moon light and the other in its shadow right next to it, the shaded one will be warmer by a couple degrees.

Does Gurdjieff write anywhere else about being? For a long time I have been searching for the answer to what it means to have a 'high level of being.'
@rideforever18 күн бұрын
Being is your literal ability to do things. The mind is free it can dream of paradise or the stars, but then nothing happens. Meanwhile you can do a few things, you can make an omlette. Perhaps you can pray. Some things you do are completely physical, some more emotional - you can "cheer people up". Being occurs when instead of dreaming you are extending your abilities, physically and emotionally, using all things together. So this give quite a different picture of things to the existentialist cafe goer who had "lots of ideas". Being is your potential to do real things, not through force but through actual ability that has been learned.

@@philalethes216 That is the beginning of something, but only the beginning. The rushing around modern people do, ends and you are presented with a sense of stillness that feels real. Someone has pulled you out of the torrent. But in fact sitting still, although relieving the madness, is only temporary. And real activity from the real person can begin, but in a different way. So there is a step by step progression, but it doesn't end with sitting still, it only begins that way.

Do you think Christianity is a better religion than Buddhism?
@rideforever20 күн бұрын
Yes because Buddhism is firstly Eastern and so not part of the line of European development, and it is also monastic. Whereas Catholicism has developed a human or worldly religion which is much harder, it requires much more ability. And it reflects the ancient "atlantean" wisdom - according to G, that is where it comes from. But more importantly than that is to find a sincere school teacher or church and to practice in an old school way. One has to be practical. Few people do anything.
@philalethes21620 күн бұрын
@@rideforever Do you mean it is better for a European person or that it is inherently better by virtue of European traditional development? I was never able to commit to Christianity because its metaphysical God does not allow me mental certainty of my self nature. It's funny that you mention Buddhism being an Eastern 'Cosmic consciousness approach' whereas to me Christianity is far more cosmic, since true Christianity is about dissolution into God through devotion and repetition. Buddhism, instead of reifying the Absolute, makes no claims about it, and instead just points out the obvious nature of paticcasamuppada and the three marks of existence, and then offers a stepwise phenomenology of freedom from that suffering. Even Jesuits were not able to successfully debate Buddhists. I know this is just 'talk' but I don't know how to reconcile it with my spirit.

They will never find life in the universe with purely quantitative methods. The reason it all seems dead out there is because the difference between a grasshopper and a man and the sun is not one of degrees, but of quality. These people exist in a world where this distinction called quality is done away with in every meaningful way, and all possibility is contingent only on probability, and that probability is only an extrapolation from a certain stilted way of observation that attempts (but fails) to do away with the observing subject. Currently, the wiseacres among them seem to be under the delusion that if they can just bridge large, astronomical distances then they can find more of that exact process of respiration which they call life and that this discovery will somehow carry deep significance. They do not realise that a word can pertain to two entirely different things and yet retain its essence, nor that two things can look entirely the same to our eyes and yet possess a perfect difference. In replacing truth with mere certainty, they refuse to see that life in its true sense is animacy, and that the universe is teeming with life. Of course, such a restructuring of the definition of life would necessitate a total re-assessment of what we think of as feeding and energy transfer, and, by extension, all of the categories of modern science.

Yes well if you just explain the situation to them I am sure they will listen and change everything they do ... And if not, why not. That is the real question. And the answer is that everything they say is mechanical and does not mean very much. They are habituation machine like people who's words and action and "thought" is not what it seems. For them, they are not even deluded. That was G's ultimate discovery.

Is getting a good job part of real things or is it just a means to an end?
@rideforever26 күн бұрын
You must take care of yourself, and having a good job is part of that of course. If you can choose something that is less mechanical and offers more range, than that is preferable. For instance a smaller company, or more human location. G always stressed our responsibilities to our family. And that we must all be humble to start where we are, but to learn to do things differently. Same place, same work, but different inside. And in this way slowly working within this frame, towards or freedom.

@rideforever28 күн бұрын
@@philalethes216 It's not like that. Gurdjieff was certain tha most human thought is meaningless, reading likewise, and the understanding comes only by the joint work of the physical (body) emotional and intellectuals worlds. @@rideforever Thanks, and not to sound snarky, but then why did he write so many books? And how come you recommend Gurdjieff’s second book of the trilogy rather than the first? And why not Ouspensky’s ISOTM?
@rideforever27 күн бұрын
@@philalethes216 He only wrote 2 books. BT and Meetings with remarkable men. Others were published by his students, either of their own experiences or their recollection of periods with G. He is not a normal teacher. He believed that talk is cheap, and that what is heard without effort is just more empty words. Therefore BT is written as a very unusual book, it makes you stretch yourself to read it. It is a "work book". MWRM gives a sort of autobiography and then sense of highly gifted men. ISOTM is more of a technical theoretical book written by Ouspensky, it is an impressive book. But, to get a sense of the whole thing, I prefer CS Nott / Fritz Peters which has the experiences of students, and what it is all about. The Fourth Way is not another of the countless self-help groups. People are attracted to it for other reasons. In my videos I try to cut through so people can hear snippets.

An interesting point. I imagine the universal substance is neither objective, i.e. accessible through purely empirical material observation, nor subjective, i.e. accessible through the observation of egotistical feeling, but the supraposition of that which resides over and through both domains in a single non-dual hypostasis.
