I also shoot with a Nikon, mine being a Nikon Z5. What white balance setting do you use on your camera? I ask because the white balance you get straight out of camera is better than what I am currently getting. Thanks!
@Dave_KochКүн бұрын
Hey Larry! Welcome aboard! The Z5 is a great camera... my friend Becky in Eugene uses that and loves it! You may or may not be correct.... the view from the iphone I am shooting this with MAY be changing the whote balance you see a bit... so keep that in mind. Also, I NEVER worry about white balance when I shoot. Especially if I am shooting in a single light color situation. Since I shoot raw, I lose nothing by setting the WB in Lr later! If I am shooting mixerd color temps, again, I think its easier to fix it in Lr. But in any situation where I might be worried, I look for a real white in the shot.... or MAKE a white in a frame so I can reference that later. But the bottom line in most situations is trust your eye.... you know when its right or wrong! All that in mind, my WB is set to "A1"

Was this shot with TS lens? Thanks for the video, it’s always interesting to see how other people edit etc. 🫡 I initially thought you forgot to change ambient blend from normal to luminosity but then noticed you had flash group above it 😅 so it wouldn’t really do anything. I rarely use ambient in normal blending mode when I blend it with flash, but there are some situations where it does look great (especially if there are no major colour casts).
@Dave_Koch6 күн бұрын
I used to do luminosity but I felt it always ended up looking dirty. I think I also used to reverse, flash on bottom, ambient on top.

Thanks! Do you ever get the window pull by over flashing the window and just paint it in using darken mode. Helps in that that technique mean you no longer have to cut in the windows. Are they both the same or is there an advantage to one technique over the other? I guest one is that it reduces the number of frames since in your technique you do not flash the window.

I enjoyed watching your method of lighting this image. When you crop the image down are you not keeping the original aspect ratio? If not, does this cause any issues with the delivered image on your MLS listing site? Thanks!
@Dave_KochАй бұрын
Thanks so much- EXCELLENT question. First, my priority is the IMAGE. Our MLS does not have strict aspect ratio requirements.... so it can vary some with no problem.... so Im lucky that way. Your MLS may vary. Tony Colangelo taught me this- go for the best crop, THEN make the resulting image.... and I sure am not going to argue with Tony! :) As long as we're on this subject.... here a great way to use verticals in an MLS that doesn't allow them- double them up! I find bathrooms are often demanding verticals.... so I'll shoot one of the basins, and a second of the shower. They pair nicely, and combine to make a horizontal aspect ratio- problem solved AND a 2-for-1 image!

I believe in one of your living room shots, you may have had two flashes visible. In this case where they are both visible, how do you edit the flashes out? My current technique requires me to flash one side of the room and then another flash image on the other side of the room. Being two images, I am able to brush myself (and flash) out of the image. Again, just wondering how this is handled when there is only one image containing both flashes? Thanks!
@Dave_KochАй бұрын
You use the other flash. It'll be in the editing episode on this shoot.... episode 6 I think!
@larryisaacs598018 күн бұрын
One additional question. I believe in one of your videos you had your images as layers in PS. However, you had to go back to LR to get an image to add to your layers. I remember you simply go back to LR and open that image in PS. However, I forget how you moved that single image over so that it joins your group of layered images that you first sent over to PS. Do you recall which if your videos this occurred so I could watch again to learn the procedure?

Mike: THIS is the lesson I so much want people to learn: YOU become the photographer you WANT to be. Sure, you have to work at it, and sure it does not happen over night.... but you have to figure out the photographer YOU want to be, then you create a business that promotes that sort of photographer. So far you have only seen a couple shooting tutorials. I have 40 edited and ready-to-go- videos all lined up and scheduled from now until December. And that is where this is gonna go. How to decide what sort of photographer you are gonna be... and how to get there. How to build a website. How to start and run your real estate business. That is where this is all going. Its a LOT more than how to frame up and edit an image.

This head has a drop in quick release head with an Arca Swiss plate on the bottom, meaning you can quickly lighten your tripod if you don’t need it. Why wouldn’t you find the storage bag useful for a precision instrument like this? The point of using this in conjunction with a ball head is to quickly get into the ball park with levelling, allow for much greater tilt angles than this head does and to add a base pan, which solves your problem of the axis being out of line with the camera. I have used the combined ball head and gear head version of this for years of architectural photography. I can say that it is a great head and has been 100% reliable. It is light weight for what it does too.

I noticed that when you were shooting your ambient exposures, you turned off your XPro flash trigger sitting on top of the camera. Then the trigger was turned back on when acquiring the flash frame. Question: When you turn that flash trigger back on, does it automatically link back to your flash and its preset intensity? If so, that is great, as I have been going to the flash trigger and turning off each flash to get the ambient frame and then having to go back to each flash and push the mode button to turn back on the flash, and unfortunately, it requires several clicks because that mode button goes from off, to TTL, to on again. Appears your technique would be a great time saver, as well as, reducing the boring repetitive task of so many button clicks to go from ambient to flash. So am I correct that all I need to do is simply turn off and on the flash trigger when going between ambient and flash frames? Thanks!
@Dave_KochАй бұрын
Larry: YES IT DOES!!!! It keeps all the previous info, and re-hooks-up-with the flashes. Sometimes I hit the "Flash Now" button if it has been a long time just to wake the flashes up....but yes it stays where you left it. Also, because the camera does not sense that you are in flash mode, it does not go into that weird mode where it shows a perfect exposure on the screen. I dont know the right word.... but in "ambient" mode, the screen will show the exposure; if you bring the shutter down, the screen will get darker, right? Well, when the camera sees you are in flash mode, it will sometimes set the screen to an "idealized" exposure.... not reproduce the actual exposure because it thinks you need to see that. Does that make sense? Well, with BOTH flash units on there, the camera does not sense you are using a flash, so you stay in the "ambient" mode on the screen, and it will reflect the light level for the exposure you choose.... I find this very helpful!
@larryisaacs5980Ай бұрын
@@Dave_Koch Thanks, I tried it out yesterday and it worked just fine. Certainly saves me a lot of button clicks on the flash trigger using this technique. Unfortunately it does appears that if you want to change a flash setting on a particular group, you have to click on that group before being able to change that flash power. Fortunately, most of the time the flash power will remain the same thus avoiding the need to activate the group. That is where I now same a ton of time. What you were describing I believe is referred to as using the "live view." In fact, it is the live view that I use to set my exposures ( I do not bracket my ambient frame). Namely, ambient being set to the right on the histogram and then taking down the exposure to the left before acquiring the flashing frame. I take it to the left far enough to remove any ambient color cast and/or until I see the window view I want. Regarding the flash frame, I always get one as I stand behind the camera and most of the time that does the job, especially in smaller rooms. If I need additional light in the room I will add a couple of flash pops that are blended in PS so I can brush myself out. If I am just lighting up an adjacent room, I just place an additional flash in that room, same as your technique. However, I noticed in your technique you set up multiple flash units within view of the frame within the same room. I am sure you will be covering this in your edit video but was wondering how you removed the additional flash units out of the seen in editing? Thanks

You are probably right. I started doing that SO long ago and I just keep doing it. The main thing I like there is that I set the exposure based on the viewfinder. When you turn the flash on (and it is DIRECTLY connected), the screen goes into auto exposure more or whatever.... it shows an idealized exposure, not a representative exposure. By having that in between, I dont get that- and that is something I REALLY do like.

Best takeaway: Why fix it in 5 minutes on site, when you can fix it in 20 with Photoshop? 😆 Also, why do you say not to use the Z8 for REP? (As someone who is about to switch to his Z8 for REP.) 🤔
@fwfeoАй бұрын
As someone who has used Z8, Z6iii, Canon R6ii, Sony A7iv, A7iii and Fuji XT-2 … for real estate shoots already, I’d say 24 MP is already more than what what’s required for real estate. You can shoot with a 12 MP camera or even 6 MP if you’re delivering for MLS and prints up your 8.5”x11”! You can print a good 24”x36” poster from 12 MP (that’s more than 100 ppi)! I’ve worked in printing as well! Resolution requirements have to do with viewing distance. 24 MP printed on 24”x36” poster gives you 166 ppi which is very good. Real estate photos are shown on web and the prints are no bigger than a brochure. Don’t waste your money! Just buy a basic camera with good dynamic range. A used Z5 and Z7 if you’re not shooting events and video! You get Z8 resolution at a bargain price! Btw, your computer storage fill up way after with more mega pixels you don’t need! 🤷♂️

I think you CAN use a Z8.... and if it were my only camera, I might. But its way overkill... and a Z6 works just fine for R/E. Righgt now Im using Z8 for sports, aircraft and landscape.... things I need hi res, poi=xel shift and super fast shutter speeds for.

I noticed that you are categorizing all of your images as published. In all of my research, I see that there are two very different camps of image registering, where are you go down a path for published images, or a separate path for unpublished images. It would seem that choosing published for everything would be a safer path if you are unsure. Do you have a thought on this?
