What an amazing band. I wish they made more records from that period. Brad’s solo is beyond beautiful..

I like how he casually asks at 1:20, “Isn’t that Cool?”, like it’s nothing really all that special. 🤣

Sounds somewhat Coltrane-like to me. Can someone explain?
@tomm_katzКүн бұрын
Probably because Mehldau's comping style is very McCoyish, also they share a similar intensity and energy over a strongly modal tune such as most of Coltrane's work

@@tomm_katz really makes sense! Thank you. I didn't associate his music with Coltranes but now sounds differently.
@acevaptsarov841013 сағат бұрын
the comping is part, but I think it's more the reason that Coltrane loved this kind of fast 3/4 feel which merges into a 4/4. He did that a lot, and his drummer pioneered a specific way of crossing between those two rhythms during a fast 3/4 swing. Something that they're doing here overall, and the drummer is doing similar things too. So I think it's more that than the comping. Brad's comping or soloing isn't super McCoy's to be honest. If anything it sounds more Herbeish... or Meldauh-ish :D

I remember walking into a local record store, back in 2000. A friend of mine (and touring jazz bassist) was walking out of the same store. He had just come back from being in NYC for some gigs. He asked me, "Have you heard of Kurt Rosenwinkel?" I had heard of him but wasn't familiar with his music (after all, these were the days before music streaming). He then said "I saw his group at Smalls in NYC. This guy is speaking a different language. Go inside and buy anything available by him!" I bought East Coast Love Affair and The Next Step. In a life constantly busy with teaching, rehearsing, and gigging, I rarely get a chance to just sit and listen to records from start to finish. I not only did that with each of those records; I have done that (with headphones no less) with everything Kurt has put out. What a visionary, who has forever changed jazz guitar and jazz composition. Like players as varied as Hendrix and Jaco, there is jazz guitar before Kurt Rosenwinkel, and, jazz guitar after him.

try to play two stacked 4ths per note on every chord or in chord changes for instance;the Major7 chord so M7 chord has a 1 3 5 7 formula then play two stacked 4ths on the 1 3 5 7 and it's sound like a video game track, you can also apply this in every chord changes and it's sound amazing 🤩

I've been playing a 12-tone Kurt "cube" for the last 20 years (from a Berklee clinic I watched on video in 2003) which - if memory serves - was the sequence from his song Cubism: F C# A C Ab E Eb B G Bb F# D. I've used it in place of the circle of 5ths when working on things in all keys. This is the first time (in 2 decades) I've tried a different one 😂 I don't know why I never thought to make up one of my own.
