Thank you you made me feel real old with you being three when that truck was born I was driving one back in 1986 and 1984 362 Peterbilt double bunk. 400 caterpillar with a 13 speed

He’s lugging the engine by shifting too early at too low RPM, going up a grade pulling a load, not letting the engine reach full rpm (2100 rpm) before shifting.

She sounds great! Driver is revving her too high though, out of her torque range where she has no power and 'drinks' too much.

This is why I still own my 1986 Freightliner FLC 120 with a 3406 Cat ,13 speed ,3.90 rears. Drove the the shit ,you can have it

If the Detroit that was in the truck didn't leak so bad I actually liked how it ran. The 3406E for a while had a ton more torque so I didn't miss the Detroit at all haha. The last Detroit tune we had was 525 I believe in this video and it was pretty decent power. Id be happy to drive another one like that as long as all the oil stayed in the motor 🤣

The thumbs down are from the truckers that know how to truly drive a cat engine. It’s just like a dozer or construction equipment high revs are what a caterpillar engine like. 1800/1900 rpm not 14/1500. That’s garbage make that girl sing that’s how she’s meant to be worked. Pathetic.

I put a buncha miles on an '85 Pete 362. 350 Big Cam Cummins, 9 speed, and 3,70s. Even with Reyco spring suspension, it rode decent.

One of the coolest things to see when I was an oiler on a pipeline right of way crew was the rows of trucks that were heading outta the yard to kickoff. Then being at kickoff and unloading lowboys and floats. All day for about 3 days was nothing but diesels and Jake brakes. I’ll probably never get to work another job like that again but I’d definitely go back and do it if I could.

I've never met someone who doesn't think these trucks sound like a symphony from the gods. I would never be able to do this job because I would easily fall asleep to this melody in minutes every day. This is a lullaby for me.

At the time of that video it was running a 78mm turbo and a c18 cam with some mild tuning a step up injectors. It ran like that for almost 4 years. It was just inframed and back to a stock cam still with the 78mm and step down injectors.
