And nowadays we have to watch at a stupid touchscreen while driving to open a simple glovebox. On 70 years, lessons have not been learned.

When I was cutting my teeth in the automotive service world in the early 90s working for a gas station, we had a little old lady that had to be in her 90s at that time that would come in for fuel. She owned a 73 and a 78, both in triple yellow. He husband was a Ford salesman and she said he would have these cars throughout the 70s as take home demos. When they got enough miles on them, he had the option to buy them at a steep discount, so he bought the 73, and his last was the 78. He passed that year. She wouldn't sell either of them. As for her 73, I recall it had an emissions sticker on the valve cover that did indeed say 351M/400 on it. The VIN said it was a 400, as did the pie plate.

I think that the Imperial Mobile Director option is cool. It lets you and your secretary work to and from the hotel.

To this day, the R body remains one of my all-time favorite 4-door designs. It's especially at its best in the elegant and classy 5th Ave. trim. Even the Grand Fury looked far more upscale despite being a value-oriented car. I remember watching "Dallas" back in the day and commercials for the St. Regis played almost every week. While I doubt "J.R." would ever buy one, I'm betting many sales were from watchers of the TV show.

Here's the explanation: The kids would be in the back seat, and they would play with the power windows until they inevitably, and expensively broke. It was really smart to offer this option.

i grew up in SEattle so A/C was never really an issue..on my cars as a teen i would pull the power to prevent the compressor kicking on (to cycle the freon even when the controls were set to off) and affecting performance.. on dads GMC pickup he converted his A/C to an air compressor and put a air tank under the hood..very simple to do...a couple of hoses and a pressure regulator to shut off the compressor/A/C unit....

My father worked at Oldsmobile in Lansing and helped introduce the Toronado in 1966. I remember when he drew me a sketch of it before the first one was manufactured. My family grew up with Toronados. I personally worked there as well & had a 1975 Toronado Broughm. Sweet cars. I miss Oldsmobiles. They made some nice cars back then! 98 Regency, Starfire. Vista Cruiser, etc.

The embarrassing, irresponsible era. Drove one. Wallowing mammoths that needed 7 litres of combustion to move, and sucked up 6mpg city 13mpg hwy. Lurched, steered like a ship. And we got angry when foreign cars took over.

My grandfather always had Chrysler Imperials...His buddy had a "59 Caddy around the same time that my grandfather owned a "61 Imperial....He would rag on my grandfather all the time saying that his "59 Caddy fins were taller than my grandfather's "61 Imperial fins....Well my grandfather took the bait and backed his Imperial up to the back of his friends Caddy....The "61 Imperial fins were taller by about an inch...My grandfather even took a Polaroid of it which my mother still has....Granted the "59 Cadillac fins are the epitome of outlandish 1950's style but Virgil Exner still had one up his sleeve to show GM how it's done.My grandfather's friend traded his Caddy off within a few months and got out of the tailfin business altogether as he really had his feelings hurt.😭😭😭😭

My 66 GTO had a 428 H.O. installed with a 4 speed & 4:10:1 rear. All manual including 12"x2" police drum brakes-finned drums. No problems. No power accessories. Best car I ever owned. Rock solid, not rattles, squeaks, and it didn't fall apart like a lot of other cars did. Could get the front end up in any gear-wheely. And it handled the corners. The 326 engine was a good runner. It wasn't a high performance engine but it did fabulous in a 23 T Bucket. P.S. Rover V8s were installed in some MGBs. Great cars.

FYI, the defect in the transmission which 'made' the the shifter drop into reverse when the car was idling, remained in the C6 & C4 transmissions until those transmissions were phased out. Ford just partially overcame the transmission's attempt to shift into reverse with a super notchy shifter. It is the spring that sets the parking pawl that is constantly trying to push the shifter into reverse. If you need to leave one of these vehicles idling then you should set the parking brake and shift the transmission into neutral. 🤓

Great car. I love the oddballs. Love the black paint. I'm not a fan of the blue interior with the black paint. It was very common in the 60's and 70's for some reason. Would look better with a red or gold interior IMO. I do like the blue itself though. Were the original tires whitewalls? That would dress it up quite a bit. Those wheel covers are not a favorite. The upgrade wheel covers often seen on the LTD's were nice. I think they were optional on the Galaxie but surely seldom ordered.

Why are non smokers so annoying and self righteous ! Smoking is bad for you so are many other things but you never hear much about those people get uppity when they see a smoker enjoying a smoke .I quit but i let people smoke in my house as i understand and i enjoyed my smoking days but all things must end in time. I quit but do not expect others to do what i do i. I also will not villainize anyone for a habit they enjoy i do not get off on the fact society is against smokers i think it is wrong to villainize a segment of society!! I do not drink anymore which is even worse for you but i would not ban it. I think everyone has a right to smoke there is pollution a lot worse that is allowed targeting peoples pleasures is wrong on all kinds of levels and life would be boring if all pleasures were banned nonsmokers would not be so high and mighty if one of their guilty pleasures were banned. Also if we are being truthful smokers are just nicer people in general much more laid back and when it was allowed in bars they were packed and it was much more fun back then all around then it is today people are much more uptight in general i say light up again people lol.

These cars running so hot is also a contributing factor, putting strain on those already weak bolts and such. These engines run up to 222 degrees by design thats when the electric fans come on, if the fans were to come on around 200, the bolts and many other parts may not have fatigued as early and caused other issues. With the A/C on I never see over 205 since the fans are constantly kicking on and off, turn the A/C off, 222 back down to 210, then back and forth until you park it.

Would be interested in hearing about the Canada-only, 1997-2005 Acura 1.6EL/1.7EL/EL (later changed to the CSX->ILX and brought to other markets). I'm interested to hear your thoughts on it since it could be considered similar to the Cimarron (the EL was basically a chrome-and-leather Civic).

I remember my parents' '68 T-bird had the same starter blocking switch problem where the shifter would slide out of park...and become so misaligned that it could also be started in Reverse!! The dealer was totally inept at the time and took numerous tries to finally fix it, all the while being predictably arrogant and telling us it was from OUR abuse. Such jerks...no wonder Japanese car companies did gangbuster biz starting in the late 60's. I don't know if it was a York or Tecumseh AC compressor in that 'Bird, but I hated how they got rumbly over time and the compressor clutch started slipping when the contacts wore down. Typical Ford cheap execution.

Not a cop car, but a nice looking replica! Most 1973 Ford full sized Cop cars were either Customs or Custom 500, post sedans, if ordered for the State Police or Highway Patrol, the 460 Police Interceptor would be the engine of choice. 1978 was the last year of this 1973 Ford body style. Not sure what year it became available, but I know for sure there was an option for an eight gallon auxiliary fuel tank, the 1978 RISP Ford LTD's which were 2 door post sedans, ordered with the 460 Police Interceptor, and were also ordered with this optional auxiliary fuel tank for extended range, since 460 Police Interceptor with smog controls only got about eight miles per gallon.

I owned several Oldsmobiles over the years. Oldsmobiles were generally ahead of the curve, both technologically and in design. For example, most drivers were introduced to front wheel drive and fuel injection by the Oldsmobile Division of GM. And when you look at cars in the eighties and nineties, the design of many of them remind you of Oldsmobiles from the seventies.
