How often are there people at this site? I want to do an overnight but I don't want to be in the way of people who have been on the trail for days.

Hi, Sparkygroover. The tent is a Big Agnes Copper Spur UL3, the same brand and model we have used on all 4 of our hikes.

Just finished all of the AT videos and looking forward to watch the Florida hike, PCT and CDT. I hiked my whole life with my dogs and really enjoyed following you and Willow. Thank you so much for sharing. PCT is on my bucket list, excited to follow you.

Thank you LittleChena!!! The PCT...you won't regret it! It's such an amazing trail, so full of beauty and mystery. And in my opinion there is know better way to experience it than with your best friend. We are headed for Colorado tomorrow to do a bit more hiking...can't wait to be back in the mountains. FYI - I will be deleting my AT, FT and PCT channels in the near future, moving all content to the channel, "Team Fortis Hikes". It is the channel that I'm currently using and uploading CDT videos to. I hope you will subscribe to it. Happy Trails!!!

I was that thinking that since 5 videos back. Get rid of this poles. No use in this terrain.

Trooper likes her poles! But like you said, they are sometimes of no use and even dangerous at times.

Thank you for the inside. 20 years ago I did a lot of mountain hiking / climbing with a friend of mine. He has Typ1 too. It was a challenge for both of us. In higher elevation he had problems with lows, sometimes lower than 40. He got very grumpy and didn't realize the danger. I always knew when he was not good and tried to get some food in him and take a test. He had to do a lot of adjustments on his pump but after a few longer hikes he figured it out and we did some amazing summits.

@TeamFortisAT9 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching, Anthony! We have had a few setbacks on our CDT journey, but that only adds to the adventure. We have been off trail for a couple of months due to some frostbite issues I had, but are back on our way now. I'm not sure if you knew, but we hike the Florida Trail in between our AT and PCT hikes. A totally different hike from the AT or PCT on so many levels. You might find the videos interesting. And yes, Willow was with us for every mile, even in the swamps:)

Your right about the storms...they come in hard...If your grilling out...man it will blow up in a heart beat...I use to live in Crimora VA...north of Waynesboro, VA. If you want to see a nice storm go up on the blue ridge parkway..to the overlook ravens roost..or climb up the humpback mountain to the top...I was up there in the 80's...at the top of humpback rock..and a storm came up..it was the middle of the night..and all you could see is the fog rolling up from the valley..then wam..it hits you...walking back down that trail with lighters was NO FUN...I sure do miss it down there..in NY now. Waynesboro and Staunton is on the west side of the blue ridge parkway. Lynchburg where you are and Charlottesville is on the east side.

Hello. I just learned about this from looking on another website and I have been wanting to know what kinds of foods you eat as a diabetic to keep yourself healthy. I am IDDM and eat low carb diets to keep my sugars down. When I look at other videos the healthy people are munching a lot of pasta and poptarts and trail mixes. Did you carry lots of vitamins and other different food items? And how did you store all of your food when you were away from a refrigerator for many many days? Thank you very much if you get to reply to this. I will continue to watch your journey
@TeamFortisAT9 жыл бұрын
Scott, as a T1 diabetic, nutrition has and always will be a major concern for me while out on the long trails. I don't cook on trail and I have never had pasta or poptarts while hiking. I keep it pretty simple, lots of low sugar protein bars such as those made by Quest, meal replacement bars, nuts, protein powder, cold oatmeal, jerky, etc. Yes, I take a selective group of vitamins each day and for a source of sugar and a quick energy boost I mainly use Gu energy gels. I normally have some treats as well such as a small bag of chips and a bit of dark chocolate. I'm a sucker for dark chocolate! Refrigeration is not much of a concern as most of what I carry is packaged and does not require cooling. Keeping my sugars up is as much of if not a bigger problem than keeping them down...

I really like it that you dont edit your videos. It keeps it real. Just curious M80, are you retired, take a LOA to get the time off?As Im nearing 60 my window is closing to be physically able to do similar things so Im giving serious thought to forgoing the financial security of working the next X number of years. Great stuff.
@TeamFortisAT9 жыл бұрын
No, I'm not retired in the true sense of the word. I think semi-retired would be a better description:) I did reach a point similar to what you describe, where I made the choice to head on out now rather than waiting. I too felt that physically it was now or never and I'm truly happy with that decision. I wouldn't trade what I have experienced over the past 3 years for any amount of money. I truly wouldn't... We have had a few setbacks on this years journey, but we are currently hiking the CDT.

Hi! Do you have any tips for backpacking with Type 1 Diabetes? Your journal/videos have been recommended to me. I am backpacking the AT for the first time (I've camped and hiked before though) for 6 days in a week. How did you keep your insulin and glucago from freezing? Tips for keeping your pack light with so many supplies?
@TeamFortisAT9 жыл бұрын
Hi Chelsea, this is a topic that truly deserves more time than I currently have, as I'm headed out for another trial tomorrow. I would be more than happy to discuss this with you further through emails though. I think you can message me via KZbin. In reference to your question above, regarding insulin and glucagon freezing. I sleep with my insulin when needed and when hiking, I store it in a pouch kept near my torso. But to be honest, I have only had to do this a handful of times as the temperatures would have to be quite cold for this to be necessary. I did have trouble with the tubing on my insulin pump freezing on the AT. Again, I now store it in a pouch kept near my torso and under clothing. I have had no issues since I started using this method and I have been down in the low teens on many occasions. I'm sorry, but I can't help you with pack weight as I'm as far from an UL hiker as you will find. I do my best to cut weight where I can, but I never take undue risk when it comes to my diabetes and safety. I just carry what I think I will need, plus some for added security...this includes extra food! There are many ways for you to cut your pack weight and lots of great sites to help you do so. Just don't cut ounces at the expense of your diabetes control. If you would like to discuss this further please feel free to message me.

Hi Team Fortis! I enjoyed following your adventure last year. I'm currious about M80's pack. Is it an Aarn pack? Would you recommend it? Which model did you use? Thanks!
@TeamFortisAT9 жыл бұрын
Susan Hornbuckle Yes, Susan, it is an Aarn pack and I have loved it. I used the Natural Balance on the AT and FT, but switched to the Featherlite Freedom for the PCT. I'm considering going back to the Natural Balance for the CDT this year.

Watching your trek again and after only 2 videos I am reminded that even though you are Team Fortis, it would have been so easy to name you "Anyhow". I still hope you do some other long trail someday soon and post more videos.
@TeamFortisAT9 жыл бұрын
I know, it's crazy embarrassing, but I just can't seem to help myself. The "Anyhow" ailment has followed me on our other treks as well. We took a couple months off after completing the AT, but have been hiking ever since. We hiked the Florida National Scenic Trail including the Keys and then after only a month of prep, we headed west to hike the Pacific Crest Trail. I posted videos for the Florida Trail and should have our PCT videos up soon. We plan to start the CDT April, 2015. Thanks for following along.

Hi Many thanks for the videos you downloaded , I was wondering whether you have to have back up and drop off with food etc on the walk , I really admire the challenge you and your wife have done,It looks a very hard , We live in the uk, and my wife and i do lots of long distance walks but nothing like the AT, the only walk that is hard where you have to carry your food or send it ahead is the Cape Wrath trail in Scotland , So many thanks for the videos you have downloaded its a joy to watch them, Regards.
