OR you could use a thin veg tanned leather, which is basically "unfinished" leather that will take paint and finishers but which also be stiff by default and you can then just make it wet, carve a texture on it and shape (again simply wetting it first) and then once it's dry it retains any shape and texture but back to being stiff! You then paint it with acrilic paint and you don't need heat or a soldering iron. It's also way safer and child friendly because again, you don't need heat and you can use regular tap water to make it moldable, but also it may happen that someone uses pleader for this which is a HORRIBLE idea, as pleader is just plastic and you could create fumes, melt it around your iron creating a big hot mess or even worst starting a fire. Even when not using pleader, using chrome tan (the finished type used for upholstery and clothing) is less ideal because you never know what waxes or finishers you got in your leather, so you still at risk of fumes or fires. I recommend everyone wanting to try this to look up veg-tan (vegetable tanned) leather, usually you can get pieces called "bellies" that are wonderful for crafting for very affordable prices (less than 20 bucks for a big piece)

I have a nice pair of leather sandles with flowers on them. Over the years the flowers have curled up. Can I take my iron to them?

What is PVA glue? Oh and what kind of leather are you using? How thick is it?
@derbypowerbyemilywinter5095
@derbypowerbyemilywinter5095 2 жыл бұрын
Hi there :) PVA is a type of craft glue that dries clear. I'll link the one I use below so that you can look into it further. As for leather, I generally use sheep leather. The thinner the leather, the higher the concentrate of PVA you will need to use when stiffening. Hope this helps! x www.spotlightstores.com/art-craft/basic-craft-supplies/craft-glues-adhesives/craft-glue/pva-glue/crafters-choice-pva-glue/80421212?gclsrc=aw.ds&gclsrc=aw.ds&gclid=Cj0KCQjwpeaYBhDXARIsAEzItbHkKaH5K1obRxfYHhOPM4QiHECBH4LZJRmLgVfjVbNSgwP8RFf6D68aAqfpEALw_wcB

Hi there! I brush the reverse side of the leather with a mix of equal parts PVA glue and water - this stiffens it so that it holds its shape when I use the hot soldering iron to shape it :)

Hi there! Thank you so much for the tutorial. I absolutely love it! I have two questions, for the gold fabric, is it like a gold tulle fabric?And for the Gold embellishments, are they real gold or just plated? I live in Canada and I've been trying to find something to find something similar.

So glad you enjoyed the tutorial! The fabric is a stretch polyester netting. Here's the link to the one I buy in Australia if you want to take a closer look: www.spotlightstores.com/sold-by-the-metre/sparkle-net/BP80257533-gold The embellishments are all plated - I find that as the headpieces aren't worn against the skin as jewellery is, gold plated is all you need. Just yell out if I can help with anything further! x
