For a newbie that was great! I am using a lap steel and am trying to learn chords. I plan to install the bendable bars on the lap to get the pedal steel effect. When I was a young piano student, they taught us little drills you could do to learn the scales. What is a goog resource to do that? Also, I want to find your second lesson. Is it out there yet?

Could up 3 frets w/ f lever be considered a 7th chord as well ?
@garysill5 ай бұрын
What strings are you playing, find the actual notes you are playing and figure out if you have a flattened 7 th note in your string group along with 2 or more notes of the major chord you are playing.

Hey Gary. What is the model of that Gretsch? I can only find round neck metal body Gretsch resonators on the web sites. I only play square neck and that one sounds great. Cheers Mike

Thats one way but it can be done with out moving the bar. A & B pedals down for the F(or 4 chord) then A pedal and LKL for G[7](or 5 chord) and not move the bar....

@donf37398 ай бұрын
@@garysill No, I meant I couldn't see where you were chiming them with your right hand. It would be the next G fret, correct? I just can't see which finger you were using. (I'm still pretty green with this instrument.) *edit* Okay, I learned from another of your videos you use the edge of the right hand 12 frets from the barred fret. I was looking for a finger, not the edge of the hand. Got it.
@garysill8 ай бұрын
I always use my thumb to chime with. But I want to correct my previous reply. The outer palm of my right hand is touching the string 1/2 way between the bridge and where the bar is not 1/2 way between the bridge and the nut.

Gary - I have a ShoBud Pro I E9 tuning - Took a few lessons from George Edwards and gave up after doing a butcher job on a few tunes- - thinking about starting again - and buying a relay pedal. Never was happy with my sound. I did audio tapes with George - they were not very clear - no backing tracks - just him describing which strings to pick. What do you offer ?

I do hour long FaceTime lessons. $50 per lesson-- lesson material included. If you have an Apple smart phone it is easy to do, you see my steel and I see yours. You do need a good WiFi signal on when we connect. Call me at 217-433-7455 if interested in learning music knowledge and good playing habits when playing pedal steel. I have excellent results and can offer references.

The Gretsch metal body resonator has a very rich and throaty sound. Its tone would cut right through any band situation easily. With that said, there is a significant difference between an actual Dobro bar and a pedal steel bar. The authentic approach to playing the Dobro includes using left hand hammer on & pull offs executed "with" the bar and not the picks. A round steel guitar bar is not designed for this, as the Dobro bar is. Playing the resonator requires a much different approach than a lap steel. It is a totally different left and right hand technique (banjo rolls, drone and open strings, etc). If not, you sound like you are playing "lap steel" on a resonator, which may be fine for some but, you won't sound like a Dobro player. You will not sound like the player that people expect when you tell them that you are a "Dobro player". Listen to actual players of this instrument, you won't hear anything that sounds like a "steel guitar". kzbin.info/www/bejne/lXeVhaiaoa6Eebssi=aqlgJHi0COIO3Z-K

Super neat video! Is the only difference between the dobro and a resonator guitar the way the strings sit off the neck?
@garysill9 ай бұрын
Not at all, it is the same instrument. Dobro was the first brand name and that has stuck to state the same instrument which is known as a resonator in generic terms. All the same item, just has 2 separate names attached to it.

When I saw this video, I laughed out loud! This very thing is what I did not consider when I bought my first guitar, and yep, my steel was at a downward angle just like you showed. So tomorrow, I'm driving down to Nashville to get longer pedal rods. My knees need 27" to clear the bottom of the cabinet. Good thing the maker of the guitar is not charging me for this. But at the same time, they never asked me to come get fitted for the guitar either and they knew this was my first one.
