Listen to that narrator's accent. I was a Turner for 50 years, and worked all over Scotland, and never heard any machinist with an accent like his!

I am absolutely sick of EVERYONE on this forum going on about "How it used to be so much better in the good old days, now all lost". This is complete balls! The Colchester Lathe Company is still alive and well and making lathes, now in Yorkshire. We bought a brand new Colchester Student only about 4 years ago (to supplement our 40 year old Triumph 2000) and it is still a very fine lathe for the money. Of course, 3 times the price of a Chinese copy, but the difference is I had confidence in how it Is built, how it will work and its durability. I am getting on, but we have new apprentices and I am certain this will still be in use when they are my age and have apprentices of their own. Colchester are not the "last man standing" in UK machine tools either - we have Mazak in Worcester making fabulous CNC machines and lots of small specialist machine tool companies like Abwood in Dartford, they are just the ones I've worked with. STOP TALKING DOWN UK MANUFACTURING! We make loads of great cars in the UK, we have the SECOND LARGEST AEROSPACE MANUFACTURING SECTOR of any country in the world (after the USA) and countless small companies exporting world leading products. But if everyone keeps knocking our manufacturing and talking it down, the politicians will not support it and see its importance. SUPPORT THE UK'S SUCCESSFUL MANUFACTURING INDUSTRIES! BOAST ABOUT OUR ACHIEVEMENTS!

At technical school in the 50s I could not wait until Machine shop practice period came up, we had among others , Colchester Student lathes. we had no eye protection and not much instruction from memory, A Nuttal nearly took my finger off because i was not instructed how to fit [and secure] the chuck. Not knowing that you had to spin on the reverse chuck locker meant that stopping tyhe spindle drive instantly without locking meant tyhat hyou had a chuck rapidly spinning off the thread at 750 revs and threatening to land on the bed, its not recomended to grab the chuck with both hands as I did, The teacher said, lucky you had the wood piece of thick ply between me and the ways or I might have lost a finger.

This lathe was an excellence in production and craftmanship never to be seen again .HOWEVER , the spraying , grinding off and applying the filler was a very dangerous procedure, without wearing protection( face masks).

What a magnificent film. Made at a time when people took pride in their work, and when companies were making quality machines. Such amazing engineering.
@PorkChopAChunkyАй бұрын
Nobody really builds quality like this anymore unless you pay big bucks. Even then I doubt they're as well made as far as longevity. It was just the standard and people made good money. Ill never forgive the people that ruined it.
The disregard for safety in these old films is really noticeable to modern sensibilities.

I started my Apprenticeship in 1963 - like most engineers in the country first year learning to file square, making your tools and then into the machine shop. My guess 99% pf us would have been on a Colchester lathe during their training.

I have a Student lathe and it continues to work to high tolerances, i live near Colchester where the old factory is long gone, its now a Tescos.. What ever were we thinking to have allowed our Once Great nation to slide into the shameful mess that it is today.
