Watching this again for a giggle. I had a 2011 140 DSG, Haldex was long in the tooth at the high mileage it had but aside from noise worked perfectly - I fitted Michelin all terrain tyres on 16" steel wheels and went all over the place in rural Northumberland, including through a deep river ford (2ft deep at the time, healthy current and lose pebble base). After all I'd taken it through, it finally ate its dual mass flywheel when stuck in a deep hole in a field (hadn't gone into it on purpose, was hidden on approach). Was going to coast as much as the car was worth so I bought an old Octavia Scout, gen 2 Haldex with PD140 engine mapped to about 170, which itself now needs work and as I've missed driving a 4x4 Yeti so much (there's nothing quite like it for me) I'm driving home a 2014 Monte Carlo model tomorrow, ex demo with one old man owner who treated it very well by the look and feel of it. My big question to the dealer given that they already said the timing belt has just been done, was whether there was any record of proper Haldex servicing, given it's gen5 with a strainer but no seperate filter (well, it's Haldex name manufactured by Borg Warner) - before I had chance to ask, he explained that it'd just been done and the strainer was cleaned - the part Skoda/VW said doesn't need touching for life, which has prematurely ended many Haldex pumps over the years - thankfully there are now many indy garages that know Haldex well including the one next door to the dealership, whom serviced it. Very pleased to learn that! Glad the belt has been done too - I changed it myself on my old Yeti when I worked as engineering manager and driver at a steam railway, not a job I wish to tackle again without all the kit. Looking forward to my drive home - might venture up over the Snake Pass back to Nottingham. Needless to say as the new one is in much better condition than my old one (9 years old which is brand new for me and 60k less miles on the clock than when I got my old one) while I plan to dabble with some sofft-roading, as they really rather brilliant for mild greenlane dabbles as stock, I won't be beating it up or driving through a river again. My plan was to lift and snorkel the old one before Darkside had done theirs (fun videos those!) but didn't get round to it before opting to sell for spares/repair. The Monte Carlo will keep its styling and stay mostly on the road, while the already ratty old orange one was going to get a NATO paint job as a mate had tins of the stuff, spare wheel I'd grabbed off Ebay was going to go on the roof rack/light bar I had. The new one has the aftermarket spare wheel kit in the boot which was a happy surprise not mentioned in the ad so I've got two spares to choose from, a third if I take the one out of the Scout... and the all-terrain tyres on steelies will be going back on a Yeti again, they're the same size as the knobbly ones Darkside put on theirs (215/65/16 - officially too big for both cars) but the slightly rounded profile means they don't scrub the arch liners, even on the Scout and they're superb in snow and ice too, but that's another story - very safe enabling almost normal driving on untreated Northumberland/Borders roads and very fun at 1am on a Monday morning on the tiny wee B roads under 4" of ice... roads were completely deserted even during the day for a few days. Sorry, autism is a bugger for typing essay comments... I just love driving and the Yeti is my favourite car so far, by far - the Scout and the old Mk4 PD150 Golf sitting on the driveway now need selling... the Golf was very fun especially after a top end rebuild in Feb with steel camshaft etc, engine is in great condition and pulls like a train and quickly - but it's no match for a 170 4x4 Yeti that'll legally map to 220... :D

The Yeti is in hindsight an utterly brilliant car. It has the aerodynamics of a brick thrown sideways, yet will handle better than a 4x4 has any right to and still give 50mpg. I utterly love mine. As a young father It would have been the perfect car, instead I had a 3 door FWD Escort 1100. Ho hum. The 1.6TD Passat (not TDi just TD.) was pretty good, but the Yeti beats it by miles. If you have a young family buy a yeti now while there are still good ones to get.

yes, no, maybe, just like other manufacturers. Got golden and trash models. Common problems are different for every models sold, afaik all models past 2000 - 2017 suffer terrible build quality with cheap plastics everywhere, problematic power window and fragile door handle. Let me tell you the real story, not covering everything from 1985 since it gonna be too long. They've gone through their dark times during mid 2000s with so-called CamPro engines developed in conjuction with Lotus ( you know Proton owned Lotus before Geely right ) and in house developed models. Before this, they enjoyed excellent sales year by year, thanks to Mitsubishi for giving them donor cars and powertrains for rebadging and development works. CamPros performed pretty good in higher rpm, but earlier versions, S4PH 1.6 and S4PE 1.3 have torque dip issue. Got no power between 2000-3000rpm which leads to bad fuel economy. I called it as half-cooked development, the CamPro literally means Cam Profiling but there was no cam phasing technology present in these two craps. Shame. Later version, IAFM and IAFM+ utilizes variable intake manifold (VIM) technology to eliminate torque dip. They also introduced CamPro CPS which means Cam Profile Switching, a technology similar to Honda VTEC and Mitsubishi MIVEC which utilizes variable valve lift technology. This is the most powerful N/A version of CamPro, producing 125hp and 150Nm of torque. Few years ahead, Proton decided to hop into the downsizing trend just like what European car manufacturers did during mid 2010. So they came up with their own turbocharged engine named CamPro CFE, which stands for Charged Fuel Efficiency. Proton Preve, Suprima S and Exora are the only models equipped with this engine. This engine produces 138hp and 205Nm, paired with Punch CVT made in Belgium. Again, they destroyed the chance. The first Proton's "global car", the Preve managed to achieve 5 stars in ASEAN NCAP and Australia NCAP. Preve also received Lotus suspension tuning for refined ride and handling characteristics, even Jean Alesi agreed that Preve drives just like any other continental cars which is known for excellent ride and handling. But the poor material quality used for interior parts, laggy clutch-based CVT and bad fuel economy are haunting every Preve, Exora and Suprima S owners, leading to bad reputation of the brand and poor resale value for these models. Moving on, Proton decided to focus in making B segment cars as they are gaining popularities in Malaysia day by day. Adequate-sized 5 seater with good fuel economy and good practicality are something that Malaysian with middle and low income craves, and Perodua, the 2nd Malaysian carmaker responded to that demand by introducing Perodua Myvi, a Daihatsu based 5 seater hatchback. Powered by Toyota engines, it is reliable, cheap and practical enough for everyone. Now it is known as the best-selling car in Malaysia. To fight Myvi's popularity that is responsible for putting them into shame for years, Proton introduced 2nd gen Persona and Iriz. Both are powered by CamPro VVT, a newly designed CamPro engine. Available in 1.3 and 1.6 version, this engine offers pretty good fuel economy and reliability, not as good as Perodua-Toyota derived engines but it is good enough to interrupt Myvi sales. Earlier batches suffer from poorly tuned CVT leading to high fuel consumption, but Proton fixed it in 1st 2019 and 2nd 2022 minor facelift for both models by recalibration and fine tuning. Newer Proton A and B segment models (specifically 2018 onwards) recorded pretty good build quality, decent fuel economy and less complaints. When Geely takeover Proton administration by buying 49.9% of their stakes in 2016/2017, all Proton in house developed models (Persona, Iriz, Exora and Saga) are fitted with Geely Key User Interface technology to enhance infotainment system capabilites by adding voice command and online music streaming, something that Proton never offered in any of their models before that. Also under Geely, Proton gained license to modify and sell a few Geely models in Malaysia as Proton models exclusively (literally rebadging). Current selling Geely rebadged models are Proton X50, Proton X70 and Proton X90. All models gained minor modifications done by Proton to fit them according to local demands respectively. That's all that I can cover tonight, thanks for reading!
