These days I only see them in the air, running errands between bases. As a kid we'd see occasional stealth fighters practicing maneuvers below the tree line in the creek beds. We could actually wave to the pilots. That was so cool. We had a Blackhawk crash in the area too. Fortunately large trees and deep snow broke their fall, and the local fire and rescue was made of loggers and ski patrol. Everyone was okay.

I don't think that the Pertinax claw is supposed to hit the buckle switch with every rotation that it makes (as shown from 4:15). While I don't know what it is, something has to be wrong here.
@FreshGroundPictures
@FreshGroundPictures 2 күн бұрын
Ordinarily there's a black metal cover over the center of the claw that prevents the buckle switch from hitting it - I removed the cover to show the claw mechanism more clearly. The switch is tripped here, and not tripped at :50. The buckle switch in the 2C is pretty useless now, as I think it required power provided by the Pilotone sync electronics in some cameras - obsolete. This camera had it's Pilotone side cover replaced by a regular cover so it no longer has connectors, electronics or a bloop light. Many cameras did not have the buckle switch at all, just a metal cover in it's place. At any rate, it doesn't do anything now, so I probably should have removed it anyway.

@@FreshGroundPictures Quite interesting! It probably makes sense to remove it. I do own a IIA (the first one to have the "new" cardioid movement) and it also does not have a buckle switch.

This Part 3 came up as the first for me and I can only say you did a terrific job. I like your general insights and fine mechanical engineering skills. I haven't looked but I hope you found the help of someone aiding in getting the motor speeds right, maybe by controlling them with an Arduino or the like. The mechanical adjustments like rollers etc. will be in place by now I guess. Anyway, great project!

How hard to convert one of this to accept Vmount Gold mount batteries?
@FreshGroundPictures
@FreshGroundPictures 4 күн бұрын
Finding a place for the mount would be difficult. More of a problem is the voltage - most of the older motors needed 16-24 volts to run. V-mount and Gold Mount max out around 14 volts.

I've assisted with the Arri 35BL, shot footage with their Arri 16BL and Arri IIb and IIc and even shot to odd printer test on an ancient Arri 35 step contact printer. In each one you can feel the pride of the engineers - they were all beautifully made and engineered to last. Nevertheless, it's worth recalling that the original Panavision Panaflex was released about 1972 and was silent without need of the lens blimp the 35BL and 35BL II required. While this worked, it was a nuisance for the camera assistant, slowing down prime lens changes. Zoom lenses like the Angenieux 25-250 had to have their lens blimp permanently fitted. We should also remember that while Arri introduced the revolutionary spinning mirror reflex viewfinder French manufacturers like Debrie, Eclair and Aaton virtually refined the engineering concept of the film movie camera, with coaxial magazines that reduced the size of the camera (Debrie Parvo) , fast magazine changes and shoulder shooting (Eclair CM3, NPR, ACL, Aaton 7). I believe Arnold and Richter (ARRI) were founded in 1917, with 108 years of building motion picture cameras, film processing machines, printers and lighting. In my book they are a fine example of why German precision engineering is so highly regarded around the world.

I´ve shot once a short with an ARRI 35BII. I wondered why the Viewfinder has some vertical kind of dividers that distract the viewing. Do you know what I mean?
@FreshGroundPictures

Yes - those are thin black metal strips in front of the ground glass. They're light baffles meant to prevent reflections off the glass from hitting the film during exposure. Apparently, they were necessary because of the mirror placement right next to the ground glass. Some cameras had them removed, but this could cause an annoying flicker if there's a bright object in the frame. By redesigning the mirror and glass placement in subsequent cameras, Arri was able to reduce or eliminate the baffles. Strangely enough, when you use the camera a lot, your mind kind of filters them out...

Always wanted to own one of these! If you get it with a PL-mount, what do you think? In today's world, is this the Bolex of 35mm cameras? Thanks for the video and for including more information about the blimp, too -- which as you know, is incredibly challenging to find information about.
@FreshGroundPictures
@FreshGroundPictures 7 күн бұрын
There are still a lot of more-affordable standard or bayonet Arri lenses around, so a PL mount is great but not absolutely necessary. Like the Bolex, new parts are no longer available, so the key is getting a good working one!

Hey there. I recently purchased one of these but there is limited info on the ones equipped with the crystal sync motor (Georg Jensen 505). Mine didn't come with a battery and am trying to find a solution but am unsure about amperage. Do you have any info regarding this? Thank you
@FreshGroundPictures
@FreshGroundPictures 7 күн бұрын
This is for a 16S? From what I know, generally 3.5 - 7.5ah batteries are recommended. I believe the Jensen motors are 12 volt? If it's 12 volt and you have a 16S, be careful about using the external 400 foot magazine with torque motor - most of the torque motors were made for the original 8 volt Arriflex camera motors. Some later ones were 12 volt for newer motors.

@@tylerfukuda Check this out: www.pacificrimcamera.com/rl/01130/01130.pdf The motor is the original 16BL Arri motor, the Jensen is a crystal controller. Make sure everything is connected and switches are in the right position.

Yea I actually ended up bypassing the crystal sync controller all together and the camera will only run ‘ungoverned’ at like 50fps+ I think there is a fault with the board. The issue is that it’s very difficult to find any replacement motors or anyone willing to work on it.

Ah, eventually you might want to get into Arduino or into Pi Pico's Micropython (these are two easiest to learn things i can think of) to control the motors. Synchronising steppers digitally via step counts is bound to be better than any mechanical system one might come up with, plus you can integrate sensors etc. Stepper motors don't have any inherent speed drift, the drift is coming from your control logic which doesn't keep consistent time. For one potentiometers are bad inputs since their readings do drift from moment to moment, and it's also not really potentiometer's fault but the ADC and supply voltage drift. But more importantly the timebase comes from a crystal oscillator, and these do drift a fair bit, so unless you have extensive calibrated temperature compensation for them, that's going to be the main problem with the digital controllers. Running steps for multiple motors from the same board which has one timebase would solve that problem. Oh also how to generate an arbitrary constant ratio of steps: Bresenham's Line Algorithm (which is a division algorithm in disguise). Don't try to do step calculations with floats, this will likely end in a lot of hair pulling. If this is something you might want to embark upon, maybe i can be of a little guidance.

It had me kind fascinated until the end. Not bad on a low budget, but shaking the camera an actors bouncing side to side was a bit juvenile. The crystal star piece looks like they got it from the now defunct 99 Cent Store. Mysterious, “you figure out what it means” story telling is very college student filmmaker. 😏

I love a well-written and directed, low-budget Indie sci-fi movie. I just can't - no matter how hard I try - suspend my disbelief enough to forget that Titan's gravity is only 14% that of Earth's. They would be half-floating with every step. When his bag fell down to him, in the first scene, it would have slowly descended and touched the floor gently. Aside from this, I like the story. I saw it years ago, somewhere, and the same thought occurred to me about gravity. Ah, well... Still, great plot, and well done, director.
