Bro African cichlids don't purposely eat other fish. They prefer algae and shrimp like animals. Feeding live minnows is just mean and not part of their diet.

If I was going to start a Heartnut orchard from scratch, what would the recommended spacing be? What would the spacing end up at after thinning?
@TheOhioCountryboy Жыл бұрын
If it were me, I would just plant at the final spacing and not thin, probably 25-30 feet apart. They grow incredibly fast.

Why wouldn't you insert the rootstock into the opposite side of the machine to make the matching cut? It sure does make a nice cut on the scion!
@TheOhioCountryboy Жыл бұрын
You could, but when you split the rootstock, the split wants to spring back closed, so it grips the scion tighter, making it easier for it to grow together. A perfectly matched cut to make together would be a loose fit, increasing chances of misalignment while you are taping it up or if the wind blows it.

Regarding grafting. I’ve heard that it is challenging to graft heartnuts. Failure rate is high. Is there a recommended technique?
@Bassfuke Жыл бұрын
At least two methods can be used: one is hot callus pipe method, second is epicotyl grafting. First one requires you to have rootstock and scion wood, and you can graft during the winter. With second one you graft directly to sprouted seed with small caliber scion wood. Both require you to sustain 27 Celsius warmth to the graft site. Both you can totally do at home, especially if you have a cool garage. I suggest you do a google scholar search for both - I learned from the studies the methods. And with "hot callus pipe" search you will find DIY-pictures and plans for it. I use epicotyl grafting, since that does not require me to have any rootstock, just seeds.

Loved the gal's comment that the 55 gallon tanks are for the squirrels to put the nuts in. Seriously though squirrels need someone that does hawking with a red tailed hawk to keep them under control. I've got a gal who's excited (I'm excited too) to have a place to bring her hawk to hunt.
@TheOhioCountryboy11 ай бұрын
The problem with hawks is that they prefer chickens, and many nut growers raise chickens too. The chickens are great at larval insect pest control. Given a choice, I would prefer to have chickens and squirrels around any day of the week over hawks. I'm allowed to nuisance trap the squirrels.
@billastell375311 ай бұрын
@@TheOhioCountryboy It depends on the hawk breed. I have chicken as well. My game chickens and meat chicken get free range. Red tail hawks, Northern Harriers, Cooper Hawks and smaller ones travel through the chicken yard often picking off the rats. I have only once had a coopers hawk take a half grown chicken in nearly 30 years. I also have race pigeons. Coopers hawks are a problem with them. The red tails keep the coopers away and also kill rodents. Red Tails are always welcome at my place. Many folks just think a hawk is a hawk but they aren't all bad.
@TheOhioCountryboy11 ай бұрын
@@billastell3753 In my experience hawks are merciless on half grown chickens, although they will occasionally take full grown chickens.
