I've done a little local theater, usually a villain or a henchman because of my size (6'4", 320); I've always loved Rene, because there always seemed to be a smile in his voice, even when he was playing an asshole. I am delighted whenever I see him in something different, like a Scottish guy on Nash Bridges, or voicing a thieving ne'er-d-well on "Justice League." I still miss him...

My boyfriend and I saw him at Star Wars Celebration IV at the Convention Center in Los Angeles in 2007. I gasped when I saw him. He was super TALL even though he was hunched over as he walked. He was 7’3!” He was being helped through the crowd with by a couple of guys. He was using a cane and walking very, very slowly. You could tell he was in a lot of pain. 😔 I read that he had double knee replacement in 2013. I’ll never forget that the crowd got super quiet as he passed through. You could hear people whispering “That’s Chewbacca.” No one was saying it loudly though. We all had a great respect for him. ❤

Peter Mayhew's presence WAS Chewie. The "voice" only slightly enhanced his work. He will always be larger than life, and a most important part of the team of actors that gave us Star Wars. RIP, sir.

I didn't think he was a very nice man to his fans. I saw him in early 2000 in fresno signing autographs at a comic n collectibles show. He was in a roped off area. Head down. Wouldn't look at anyone. He was charging for signatures, talk, and photo with him. $25 to $50 if you wanted the full Mayhew experience. But people didn't know they had to pay, so people kept going straight up to him. He didn't like that. He yelled at tge promoters of the event and people that wanted to talk to him. He wanted nothing to do with anyone except for their money. A mother came up to him with her young son and he hammered her. I specifically went there to meet him, and I quickly changed my mind. I had no interest in meeting that jerk. And as for his abandoned memorabilia that he left behind in the atic before he died. His family wants it back. How hard is it to pay a kid 20 bucks to go up and get your stuff down. He didn't care about it that's why. Family is money hungry that's why.

I met Peter, several years ago, at a Sci-Fi convention in New Hampshire. It was at his autograph table and he invited me to have a seat next to him and we chatted about life, the universe and everything for over an hour. He was gracious and very personable. Rest in Peace gentle giant.

The great thing about Chewbacca, and Peter Mayhew's performance, is that never, not once, did you look at him and think that it was a guy in a furry suit. His movements, his gait, even his expressive eyes made you completely forget that Wookiees aren't real creatures. George Lucas lucked out with him and David Prowse (who got royally shafted at the end by Lucasfilm IMHO) . Now, on a bit of tangent... accent aside.... Mayhew's facial expressions when talking are not unlike Fred Gwynne's. He could have been an interesting Herman Munster. 🙂
