The books CHARLOTTES STORY talks about Charlotte and Ned Nedhauk living in my great grandparents pineapple farm on Sands Cut, Elliot’s Key. Also, check out the book Lemon City by Dr Thelma Peters. My “Filer family” has a chapter that talks about farming on Elliott’s Key in the late 1800’s.

Wow! What an awesome group doing such loving work for those who need it. I’ve made one fidget blanket blanket blanket for a dear friend’s daughter. The daughter is 36 but has the intelligence of a 2 year old. She is also nonverbal and autistic. When she got it she wouldn’t leave it alone….even took it to bed with her. I’m in the process of making a second one for her. You have given me so many new ideas. Thank you so much. In case you didn’t know, teachers that have autistic students have asked for these blankets. Something you might consider for the future. God bless each and everyone of you for your dedication to this wonderful project. Chris W. Retired teacher

Bill Baggs was NOT the editor of the Miami Times, he was the editor of the Miami News which, like other afternoon/evening newspapers, expired in the 1980s. It had won several Pulitzer prizes and was highly respected for its editorials and columnists. Since the Herald had already reported most breaking news stories in the morning, the Miami News was noted for its in depth articles.

I LOVE this! I've worked with people who have dementia and I can tell that the fidget blanket would be enjoyed by many, especially someone with Alzheimer's. It's giving me even more ideas! - like a fidgety wheelchair or walker bag, or as I think of making walker or wheelchair totes I'm thinking how much more enjoyable it could be for someone if it has lots of pockets, zippers, buttons and embellishments, sort of along the lines of crazy quilting, but keeping safety in mind! 😉 Thank you for this inspiration! You've all really sparked my imagination (and my heart). ♥️

My Dad was a bombardier in the China Burma India Theater. It destroyed him. I served in our Nuclear Submarine NAVY 67-73. I had it good. My great uncle was born in Key West. But raised on Fowry Rocks lighthouse. He later bc the manager of Key Biscayne for the James Deering family. That was bf the causeway was built. My Grandfather sent over an army jeep and we had the whole island to ourselves. We stayed at the James Deering fishing lodge just south of the lighthouse. What fun we had. Kudos to the great job of restoring the lighthouse and building the original keepers buildings.

Regarding the house design: One would think the people in charge of the design would have a built a house more in tune with the local climate. This was the worst possible design for south Florida. Cape Florida had an Army base to defend the light and keepers from the Indians which was later moved to the mouth of the Miami River. As settlers slowly moved to Miami, the soldiers were better located.

The lower walls of the lighthouse are hollow. They were supposed to be solid but the contractor cheated. Also the first ship of bricks was highjacked. This wasn’t discovered under it was rebuilt. So he got away with it.

General Mead ordered two land location markers for Key Biscayne, one was found when they were building the golf course and the other found in 30 feet of water 1/4 mile in the direction of Fowry Lighthouse. The lighthouse was originally built about 1/4 mile inside the island. My family had a pineapple farm on Elliott’s Key in 1875 and moved to Lemon City in 1894 building a General Store on FILER avenue (NE 63rd Street.
