Hey! With a Masters and six years experience it should be very easy for a company to hire you and apply for your visa. Once you sign a work contract with them they will apply for the visa on your behalf. Should all be pretty straightforward - you just need to get the job offer first!

How about the meter running really fast. I am used to taxi rides and the meter clicking up slowly but recent trip to Macau the taxi meter clicked up 2 dollars evert few seconds. Seems it was running way too fast for what I am used to in Philippines. Any comments on this? Is this normal or was it a scam?
@MyBrokenPassport
@MyBrokenPassport 3 ай бұрын
Hey, you mean a taxi in Macau, or a taxi taking you from Hong Kong to the Macau border crossing? In Hong Kong, once you get past the flat fee of the metre the fare does increase every few seconds (you hear the meter beeping). I only really use taxis for short distances, any journey more than a few minutes I check the price on Uber first as this gives you an idea of how much the journey should cost whether with Uber or in a taxi.

Hey Friend. I work in digital marketing and communications, my wife is a Honkonger....we'd love to move to HK, but I'm finding it really difficult to secure any interviews. I have great experience (I work for one of the "Big 4" consultancy firms) and I have an MBA. I'm still in the UK. Is it easier to find work if we are actually in HK? It just seems really risky...
@MyBrokenPassport
@MyBrokenPassport 10 ай бұрын
Hey! I have good news for you... apply for a dependent visa through your wife, this enables you to work in any job or go self-employed here in Hong Kong (potential employers won't need to go through the hassle of applying for a visa for you). It will be 1000 times easier to get a job once you're already in Hong Kong (I know from experience). Imagine you're the recruiter in a company and you have 60 qualified applicants for one position - the first thing you're going to do is bin anyone who isn't already living in HK because there's a risk you go through the whole hiring process and then they decide not to move here). Also, if you're working for one of the 'Big 4' they probably have an office in HK - have you checked if they can transfer you? If that doesn't work out try the banks. I know an American guy doing marketing for one of the big US banks here. It will be a lot easier than you think 🙂

My first visit to HK was when Typhoon York landed in 1999. I was baffled by some of the local architectural decisions, such as ceramic tile as siding. But it made sense in a city designed for a category 5 storm with no means of evacuating. The concrete and steel residential skyscraper I was in handled it like a champ.
@MyBrokenPassport
@MyBrokenPassport Жыл бұрын
Absolutely, the infrastructure for dealing with such storms is great. As soon as the winds died down yesterday the emergency services were out clearing roads and cutting down damaged trees. The city was back to normal very quickly.

There is a high chance that most of them will move back after getting the passport. Hey Ed, I worked in the music scene in the UK for about 12 years before moving to HK. Getting a bit old for it now but still love to fire on some of the old tunes every now and again. There's a decent amount of small events popping up here but it's nothing compared to Europe. It's one of the things Hong Kong is really lacking in my opinion.

Another notorious scam are weakened taxi windows. Taxi drivers will pick up people in LKF, usually drunk. When the passenger gets out and closes the door the glass window will shatter. The driver will act surprised and demand to get compensated, around five thousand bucks. Don't try to argue or negotiate. Just call the police right away as they are aware of this scam.
