Hi Catherine! Great question! They will stay in the 128 trays til they are a few inches tall. Then we'll harden them off by opening up the tunnel ends and sides for a few days. Then they'll go straight out into the field. We don't pot them up because of the labor associated in doing so - it significantly increases our cost of production per a stem. Hope this helps! Good question! Yes, competition from weeds for nutrients in the soil, water, and sunlight! If you direct sew seeds in the garden now they will sit and wait to germinate til it is warm enough to do so. The problem is that the weeds have also planted seeds that are also waiting to germinate. Both your seeds and the weed seeds will germinate at the same time. And then your desired seedlings are lost in a sea of weed seedlings. Very hard to pick out the weeds without disturbing your desired seedlings. AND the weeds will often grow faster than your seedlings, making it even harder for the baby plants you love to grow big and strong.
