The Episcopal Church membership is actually collapsing and demographers say that it and almost all the mainline protestant churches will be gone somewhere between 2040 and 2050. No one is forcing this on these churches; people are simply walking away. In Germany, some Lutheran theologians and historians are suggesting that the protestant reformation will first collapse in the United States. They suggest that American Protestantism will not survive the crisis that will happen to the United States from the climate crisis and the economic crisis and the crisis of Donald Trump. They say Germans understand Donald Trump because of the horrors they went through with Hitler a couple of generations ago. They also suggest that the fundamentalist movement that has taken over much of American protestantism - over 85% of it, will bring a close to the reformation on this continent much faster, especially it’s close ties to political extremism. Another reason is that there is now over 28,000 protestant denominations in the world, and most of them are in the United States. Churches are breaking up every day and many of the inter-denominational churches have registered themselves as actual denominations. A recent study show that between 1500 and 2000 protestant ministers a month are leaving the ministry; this is shocking. Many of these ministers are leaving because they are frustrated that they’re churches are so politically divided with some reporting that their parishioners are threatening them when they talk about such innocent things as the Sermon on the Mount calling it socialism. The reformation in the United States looks more and more like a train wreck. So it’s not just the Episcopal church.
