Safe? Hinges don't make you safe. The screws do. The longer the better. 3 inch minimum.

Not much said in the video about the router bit. Having the correct router bit is critical to using the jig with a plunge router. Soss recommends Amana 51310 bit.

Bad propaganda. I’ve been manufacturing doors for over 30 years and can see through this cheap propaganda campaign. The inherent flaw - or disadvantage, depending on how you look at it - of non-adjustable hinges like soss concealed hinges, butt hinges, etc. is that they cannot be adjusted for seasonal humidity changes; the adjustment feature is not there for ease of installation, but for ease of adjustment as the solid timber doors acclimate. Professionals are expected to learn how their hardware works. That’s the difference between a professional and a DIY person. It’s the equivalent of saying that a spray finish is costly (on account of the necessary equipment), potentially hazardous and requires a certain skill level, whereas brush-on varnish is safer and can be applied with only a cheap and simple tool! The answer, of course, is that the best and most durable finishes can ONLY be applied by spray gun, and those who do it are professionals with all the proper facilities and gear. Moreover, it must be stated that quality adjustable hinges do not support the door through the adjustment mechanism alone; it’s more complex than that. That’s why they offer years of trouble-free service and are the choice of discerning tradesmen. I repeat, again, a completely misleading and disingenuous portrayal of soss hinges aimed at the uninformed.
@nationfirst42812 жыл бұрын
Why do you need adjustments if frame and doors are perfectly made?
@bethoughtprovoking2 жыл бұрын
@@nationfirst4281 If you read my comment carefully, you would have had your answer. Doors made of composite materials are highly stable and rarely require adjustment over time; but the same cannot be said of solid timber doors. Wood expands and contracts with seasonal changes in ambient humidity, accordingly. As a result, a well-fitted door may require some minor adjustments over the course of its life due to those humidity fluctuations. The old masters would solve the problem by putting plane to wood: we have progressed to adjustable hinges.

Wireline .Cables. Soss hinges are the original invisible hinges. They are not and never have been made in China. If you see one that says “China” it is a knockoff of the true Soss hinges.

How thick does the door jamb need to be? Does a typical 3/4" thick door jamb work, or do you need something thicker for the mortised hinges? Thank you.
@tylernettestad4 жыл бұрын
The 3/4" thick door jamb is sufficient. The deep mortise will end up going into the buck stud a little bit. The shallow mortise is what really counts.
@jdcarling3 жыл бұрын
The instructions say to use 5/4 which is 1” thick.
@SansP3ur6 жыл бұрын
Is that spin tab @ 1:19 removed before transferring the jig to the door jamb? I see that later in the video, it's still in place when you return the jig to the door, so I'm wondering if the thickness of the tab and its fastener create the gap at the top of the door to the jamb above it.
@tylernettestad4 жыл бұрын
Yes, the thickness of the tab serves as the space between the head jamb and the door.

Tyler Nettestad I’m going to be building a double door closet door and was wondering since the #216 Soss hinge is spec’d out at having a 1/16” gap when closed, and I’d like to create an 1/8” gap on all sides of the jambs around these doors, could I just set the shallow mortise 1/32nd less in depth on both the door and the jamb so that the hinge is essentially sitting proud of the door edge and jamb 1/32nd to create that total of an 1/8” gap? Thx
@tylernettestad4 жыл бұрын
@@tundrawhisperer4821 I don't see any reason why that would not work. However, I guess your hinge becomes a little less "invisible" that way, as you may be able to see some of the hardware with the door closed. I've never tried it, so I can't speak from experience. You could test it out on a piece of scrap first and see.
@tundrawhisperer48214 жыл бұрын
Tyler Nettestad that is true about the risk of more exposure when closed, but they make a hinge in a black finish, and hoping that color would get lost in the 1/8” shadow line gap. But a prior test would be a good step first. Thx
@tundrawhisperer48214 жыл бұрын
Turns out I can use a 212 hinge for my double closet door project I’m building. Which is requiring a 3/8 diameter cutting bit. Im curious on what router bit type you like to use for cutting these mortises. I’m leaning towards that Amana 51304 bit, but I see you could use the Amana 46259S, but it’s almost twice the cost. Thx
