Codependency is never healthy-but external stress TO a relationship (hardly uncommon with LGBTQ people) or with the individuals in a relationship when dealing with *external* events will obviously impact those individuals. That’s cause & effect. Straight relationships have a web of invisible support that is largely lacking in LGBTQ relationships unless friends & family are able to fill in-and **that** dependency can be unhealthy too. Yet we all are part of a social fabric-so what’s the answer? Balance. For Nick to be concerned but carrying on as if “everything would work itself out” would mean-and convey-that Charlie was, in fact, just a (transient) boyfriend. A first love, exciting for that but essentially a distraction from the rest of his life. I think their relationship is much more than that. It’s my view that they are “soul-mates” (or whatever term you prefer) and they are destined to be together-and obviously want to be. Yes, they have considerable growing up to do. Given their ages that’s hardly surprising. But both guys have a solid instinct for emotional sensibility. Nick and Charlie have both been responsible as teens-even their excesses have been moderate at worst. Drinking? Drugs? Nope. The worst they’ve done is made out-chastely! Nick feels the lack of self-identity and, as he put it, “wants the Uni experience.” Nick also agreed to go on the family vacation, something he could have balked at. He was willing-even happy at the prospect of the vacation despite being away from Charlie. That is not codependence, that is independence and it is healthy. It was only his understandable worry over Charlie’s ED that intruded. Charlie had his own journey to make, profoundly complicated by being a survivor of prolonged traumatic assault. As his therapist pointed out, he still had the inner strength to take risks and to be vulnerable, showing Charlie to be far more resilient than appearances might suggest. He will have a struggle with the (hoped for) season 4 which we (hope) will cover with the Summer and extend into the first terms at HS and Uni where N&C are separated. I’ll just observe that while 4½ hours IS a long drive, my daily commute when I worked was 1½ or 2 hours-each way-depending on which office I was going to. A few decades ago I had someone very close who lived 1500 miles away. I’d take frequent long (4 day) weekends, perhaps one every 4-6 weeks. Fortunately I had a job that gave me the leeway to leave a little early to catch a flight or arrive a little late when returning so I was able to maximize those four days… but the point is LD relationships can be made to work. And the time traveling is relative. Charlie can get his license and Nick can take the train using that time to study. Problems with possible solutions. Yes, life will change, but with that change comes opportunity. And Charlie is smart. HE might end up being accepted into Oxford if he focuses. But… only Alice Oseman knows. 😃

I really hope next season they dive into Nicks codependency issues with Charlie although is it cute and wanting to always be with your person just like his aunt said it’s unhealthy and even in scenes after Charlie came back and was better Nick seemed out of place when he wasn’t with him Uni will be a challenge but I’d love to see his evolution of finding himself
