Hello! Just to clarify... The "relationship between 'this' and 'that'" that I'm referring to is between the center of mass/axis and point of contact. This is all about maintaining that relationship and connecting the 1 to 2 (P.O.C. connecting to, and balancing between the opponent's bone structure and mass)

Rich, Thank you for clarifying it.

I love your videos Lan. But this one has me somewhat stumped. To me, "be like water" seems closely related to the frowned upon terminology of visualize or imagine. Yet, if you were to use ILC terminology one could easily equate qualities (e.g. 10-10) as the cause and the efficacy of the interaction (i.e. you "defeating" your opponent) as the effect (observable). However, Sifu said, for example, that the 5 qualities are an affect and not the cause. I am really starting to internalize that concept, and applying it when in contact with a partner is what I perceive you are doing in this video. Seems like you are demonstrating a direct understanding of merging with your opponent at the point of contact and calling that "be like water." Do I have that about right? Then you said if you go into the bone you get pushed over. What it looked like to me is that you got pushed back because you skipped or misapplied some of the qualities (e.g. no loop and projecting into partners yang side only). When it worked (i.e. being like water), you added several qualities in a circular vs. linear way (e.g. the loop and you crossed over to opponents upper yin side). What ILC terminology would you use to describe what you are doing at the point of contact?
@NinjatoSama5 жыл бұрын
My explanation was from the CENTER VIEW. Not the breakdown of the system parts. All the qualities of the 15 basic exercises are present and assumed "already there". The Be Like Water was an analogy for the web of awareness I casted from my center to the opponent that encompasses me and the opponent. Go higher up into the system where it is about ATTENTION, ATTENTION, ATTENTION. Your ATTENTION is on what your ATTENTION is paying ATTENTION to. Thus my mind is present, FORMLESS, and neutral. My MIND is like WATER, it is FORMLESS thus can be everywhere, enveloping the space around me. How wide is your awareness web? All the qualities and stuff are peripheral. Those are manifestations of mind. I'm not DOING. If you fall into periphery, you are still DOING. If you are still DOING, then you didn't see that everything was already there. Nothing to add, nothing to take away. The training clearly points us in this order, UNIFY SELF, then UNIFY SELF TO POC, then UNIFY w/ OPPONENT. So are you internalizing the moves, the shapes, the qualities or the principle and concept itself? There is a difference. I am just maintaining CIRCLE TO CENTER, CENTER TO CENTER and CENTER w/ a CROSS at the POC. I hope that clears things up a bit ;)...here's another question....How do you know if I was visualizing or imagining or actually being? I truly meant BE like water.

@@NinjatoSama Thanks for the clarification. It wasn't what you did but rather how you explained what you did that perplexed me. I do get the distinction you are making about doing vs. being, and it's a big one. Breaking the habits of reacting from past conditioning vs. acting in the present can be a challenging paradigm shift (or at least it was for me).

This kind of practice is indeed a ton of fun, but it really should be kept in "context"... While it certainly yields some useful principles, it should be reminded the old school (as in pre-revolution) guys spent very, very little time on this sort of thing. It certainly expresses the attributes of "high level", at least within the level intensity of the exchange. But therein lies the rub. The *intensity* of the exchange... Over-focus on these subtleties is why Richard Clear lost PH matches to guys with only one year of training. This is not aimed at Lan (he knows what I am talking about), it's aimed at those who watch this and get excited about winning fights...

Exactamente. Maestro.

I've been thinking of recording myself doing the chords from Misty as a means of showing off my tuning, (G-D-d-f-g#-b) and wanted to see if anyone else had done a version that uses ringing arpeggiated chords the way I do. I rather like your performance and it seems a shame it's gotten only three likes in seven years. Are you still playing guitar? If you'd be interested in hearing my version, let me know and perhaps the encouragement will help me get up the courage to record and post it.

pivoting ideally should be done from the center of the foot.
