Daff, how do the Pilots get back to their base after taking the ships into port?

The pilot companies each have a fleet of cars that are positioned in the port area of Melbourne, Geelong and of course Queenscliff.

Nice one Wally. I've yet to see a passenger on deck catching the breeze as their cruise ship powers through the heads. Perhaps there all having dinner, as was the case when me and my wife & kids aboard the RHMS Britanis entered the heads around 5:00 pm on 25/06/1973.

12:15. Trying to manoeuvre a pilot boat next to a liner in swell like that is utterly dangerous. Surely there has to be a better way to do this....

So Golden Australis, no pilot flag, and no pilot boarding. Exempt skipper..unusual for a Singapore reg vessel.
@daff.wallace226713 күн бұрын
As mentioned in the video the pilot is already aboard the Golden Australis. Also due to the high winds and safety routines the pilot flag may not be hoisted. Note the car carrier also does not fly one at this point either. The use of flags are not as well strictly followed in certain weather conditions. Just like radios took over the role of a lot of flag signalling between ships and shore. The ships/pilots radio VTS when pilots are embarked or disembarked at Port Phillip heads. You have a keep eye.

However does the ships rudder gain authority in winds like that. It must be huge or there are 2 or 3 of them together with bow thrusters.
@daff.wallace226713 күн бұрын
Bow thrusters are not used at that speed as they would be useless. The propellor pushing water past the rudder gives it steerage. Yes it becomes a skill in this weather to keep a ship with so much windage on course.

I was always under the impression and taught when doing my coxswain course that the white over red pilot flag would only be displayed when a pilot was onboard the vessel. It was not to be always left up. I have always wanted to go for a ride in a pilot boat... Thanks for the video.
@daff.wallace226713 күн бұрын
You are right, the flag is only displayed when a pilot is on board a ship. The flag aboard the launch is another way of identifying the launch as well as the "PILOT " sign on the cabin side to vessels in the area.

Thank you for showing us around the pilot boat.

Nice, seems to handle the rough weather with no issues. I know some pilot launch boats are self righting - is this model? Is the front hatch for when it is too rough to use the tag lines & deck? Thanks for sharing.
@daff.wallace226716 күн бұрын
No all pilots come from the aft door you see in the video. Opening the front hatch would be a wet and awkward way to the foredeck. Probably allowing water below, not a good thing.

Fascinating! I have always wondered about the safety of the pilots in rough seas but the Grffiths has lots of safety equipment. I know these pilot vessels can handle rough seas, but I expect there may be times the seas get too rough to go out. The seas were horrendous the day PM Harold Holt went for his last swim at Cheviot beach in 1967 and even the Griffiths couldn't have saved him.
