Its a Naval training ship so to head out ubnder engines is a Cheat IMHO. Should have been under sail with the arms manned. I remember visiting Portsmouth back in 1996 and watching from HMS Dolphin's Mess Room, in company with my brother Nuclear Submarine Fleet Chief Engineer (Retired) an American battleship entering harbour. All the sailors of the battleship were manning the deck and guns. Quite a stunning sight deserving another round of rum.

They did a full display with hands on the yards etc and flags flying etc as they came up to their berth in Melbourne. Some 5 hrs steaming away from the heads.

Been out the heads in a fishing boat with the old man when I was young pretty scary going past the the big whirl pools then when your out there in the big swell you no there big when you see the ships disappear and you come out off the swell the ships are going down

The water through the heads seems very calm on that day. I wonder about the speed of the ship 🚢. She looks to be travelling very fast.
@daff.wallace226715 күн бұрын
Average speed for a container ship in the transit is 15 odd knots.

Perhaps one day the pilot station might show us around a boat and maybe take you out to a ship with the pilot aboard. BTW have got fond memories of the bridge in the background which leads to Swan Island and the tough golf course (when the winds blowing). There was also a government spy training centre on the island (don't know if its still there).
@daff.wallace226717 күн бұрын
@davidholder3207 Swan Island is both still a golf course and a Army base and Vic Pol boat squad base.

Was the camera in a vessel going the opposite direction? Watching the scenery go by behind the yacht makes it look like they're enjoying good progress.
@daff.wallace226718 күн бұрын
The camera was at the lighthouse onshore. It was a safe passage but highlights the tidal flow at times can slow things to a halt at times.

@@daff.wallace2267 What a great position to shoot from! In that case, they don't look like they were doing too badly. My father used to tell the story of him crewing on an H 28 going through the rip on a deep reach. The skipper had misread the tide chart. They had 6+knots on the log but were going backward at about the same rate, over ground. Dad said it was one of the most exhilarating sails that he ever had in that yacht! By the way, it took them another 6 hours or so to actually get through.

Daff did you know the first study directly linking stress to cardiovascular disease was done by doctor working with the ACTU. He did a PhD thesis and he used a study of Victorian Sea Pilots navigating ships through the Rip. I think it was done in the early 80s. It was an excellent area to study given the Rip is one of the most dangerous areas of sea crossings in the world. I believe this thesis was done through RMIT. 😊
