The example for violating logic from Menachos is dubious. That's a bad logical argument on behalf of C. Hayes. Just as it is unhealthy to drink distilled water lacking any minerals, so it is proper for humans to consume oil that's not pure. Furthermore, talmud Brachot states that oil by itself may damage a body.

It is exciting to see that there is an increasing interest in so-called Western esotericism these days. We have come a long way since the scaremongering of post WW2 viewpoints such as those of Peter Staudenmaier. Thank you to the current generation of academics exploring these topics such as Nina Kokkinen, Julian Strube, Edmund Lingan and Wouter Hanegraaff. They are helping to bring the conversation into a 21stC understanding of modern spiritual traditions - in particular I refer to Kokkinen’s theory of “seekers” and “seekership”. There has been so much good that has come from the Waldorf/Steiner based education system which is too easily dismissed by those who do not understand the esoteric currents that informed it. This, as well as other 20thC occult revival movements, has played a major part in the revitalising of modern spirituality which should not be underestimated.
