I shoot at wide angles mostly, with 35mm being the farthest. I love the way wide angle forces you to think, to slow down, to really study the world around you. There is also the intimacy of it, with having to get super close to the subject to fill the frame. Any Summilux is a fun time, but an 18mm equiv lens with a 1.7 is my next lens. Widest I have at the moment is the M Zuiko 12mm F2, a spectacular lens, but I find myself needing more in the frame. Loved the video and your thoughts about your journey, sounds like you had a very interesting time!

If you ever decide to update this review, please include the Olympus/OMS 14-150mm f4-5.6. It has exceptional sharpness from end to end, much better then the Olympus/OMS 40-150mm f4-5.6 that you tested, but the same size.

That’s a lens I’ve never used. I understand it’s comparable to the 14-140 Panasonic f/3.5-5.6 which is a solid lens for a 10x zoom. But the long end isn’t as sharp as the 40-150s unsurprisingly. If the Oly 14-150 is exceptionally sharp I’ve been missing out! Thanks for the comment and for checking out the video.

Greetings Jon, I've recently picked up a Nikon Z50 from a friend and I'm looking to get into a mix of general videography and filmmaking. I don't do that much photography but i tend to take a couple of pictures here and there. Is this a good lens for client video work and hobby filmmaking? There's currently one going for $180 at my local store. I'm still hesitating whether to pick it up or not due to the limitations that you mentioned, for instance the Z50 doesn't have any IBIS and nor does the 40mm, so I'm guessing I'm going to be using a gimbal more often? Regarding the magenta problem, can it be mediated using a flat profile? does it interfere with color grading? Thanks! EDIT: I forgot to mention that the Z50 is a crop sensor, i didn't take that into account so i'm guessting i won't be getting the 35/40mm full frame equivalent of the crop sensor? In this case should i go with the 28mm f2.8?
@jonneave
@jonneave 5 күн бұрын
Hi Amine. Congrats on getting the Z50. It’s a solid if underrated camera which takes good quality 4k footage if you’re content with the limited range of formats. I don’t find the magenta shift much of a problem. If I’m shooting footage that I want to match with another camera, I’ll do a custom white balance on each of the cameras. I haven’t noticed a problem comparing the outputs from my various cameras using this approach but that said, I’m not overly sensitive to modest color profile differences. As for lenses, the 28mm f2.8 and the 40mm f2 are both solid options with pretty quiet focus motors. But as you said, there’s no stabilization in the body or those lenses unless you opt for electronic VR. One option that I’ve quite liked is the Nikon PZ VR 12-28mm. It’s definitely a slow lens from an aperture perspective but otherwise I find it a good lens for video on the Nikon crop bodies. And the VR is very nice for shooting video. Let me know which way you’re thinking of going! Thanks for leaving the comment.

@@jonneave If I had known that Lumix was going to release this 9mm I would have waited, I really miss autofocus. But it has been useful to me, I used it in a short film and I use it a lot in events, where the context in which the person is is important. The use of 85mm for portraits is very strange for me, because I have always wanted the context in which the subject is located to be seen. I think semi-telephotos are used because they allow you to erase the background and "beautify" the angles of the face. But a super wide angle allows you to be right next to the person speaking and see the reactions of those around them and up to the ceiling... hahahaha

I’m coming from a 7D and just picked up the EM-1 mk1 with a 20 mm f1.7 pancake motorized lens that is too slow for moving objects. Would you say it is at least as good or better with an appropriate lens maybe the 14 to 40 mm 2.8 pro?

Hey Steve, thanks for checking out the video. That’s an interesting question. The 7D is a decent camera for moving subjects. The 20mm f/1.7 is a really nice little lens but it has very slow focus motors. Pretty much any other micro four thirds lens will be faster. When I used the E-M1.1 in this video it would perform nicely with moving subjects. The 12-40mm is a very nice lens and I’m pretty confident it would work as well as the PL 50-200 and Oly 75mm that I used in the video for this task. Thanks again for checking out the video.

Hi John, Have been extensively checking online & I find from the various comments that there is a Firmware issue regarding Tamron lenses coupled with ALL Z MOUNT NIKONS. People with Z50, Z5, Z6 ii, & Z7 have complained of the same issue that you have stated in your video of the Tamron 150-500 coupled with the Z8. Some have complained of grey fringing when they have used the Tamron 35-150 with their Z7. Another gentleman has complained of the Z50 coupled with the Tamron 100-400. I had placed an order for the Tamron 100-400 just yesterday & casually decided in the night to see the comments of other photographers using the Z8 when I came across the aforesaid comments of the Z Mount Users. Thanks for your Review. By the way, I have cancelled the order for the Tamron 100-400 lens. I'll stick to buying the Nikon Z Mount 100-400 lens as & when I can collect the dough. Have a great day, John. Till Tamron corrects this anomaly with a Software Update, Nikon Z Mount Owners should avoid Tamron lenses.

Hey Ink, thanks very much for checking out the video. It’s been over a year and I think I’m still on that ultra wide journey! I do have both Nikon and micro four thirds gear. And I have both full frame and APSC Nikon bodies. I have found the autofocus on the fairly entry level Nikon crop bodies to be a bit easier to find and stay focused on subjects than my latest Olympus body which is the E-M1 iii. I have been shooting my kids skiing, mountain biking, playing soccer and softball with my ZFc and 50-250 when i want to go light. I have a couple of PL lens (50-200 & 100-400) which I’d love to use on a better AF performing micro four thirds body. And to that end, I’ve noticed that the O-M1.1 has dropped significantly since the mk 2 was released so I put an order in for that body which should arrive soon! I’m hoping the AF is a step up from my E-M1 iii and Nikon crop bodies and goes some way to closing the gap to that of my Z8….lets see! Thanks again for checking out the video.

As someone has already mentioned you can't really get a 24-70 f/4 S for the price of the 28mm f/2.8 S, used or otherwise. I'm currently seeing a difference of $200 for used from reputable dealers. I have the 14-30 S. I have the 24-70 S. I love them both but even though they are small for what they are, they are often too big for casual carry. And my 70-200 f/2.8 certainly is. So how do you go super small and super light? Well, Nikon gives you those options with the 40 f/2, the 28 f/2.8 and the 26 f/2.8 (which unlike the other two is not cheap at all). I don't think it is practical to compare them with fast high end expensive primes. I don't even think it is practical to compare them to fast cheap Chinese primes. None of these are small and light. And I think that is the take home story here. Anyone expecting sub $300, small, lightweight primes to perform in the same way as large expensive primes is not being realistic. Small and light can be an extremely important aspects of a lens and that is going to come at a cost. Especially when you add 'cheap' to that formula. The adage about tripods comes to mind: Cheap. Light. Strong. You get to pick two of those. I already have the 40mm f2. I have no delusions about it. I have three S level lenses to compare it to. But I find it to be one of my favorite lenses. Likewise, at the next opportunity I will pick up a used 28 f2.8. I expect similar utility from it. These lenses turn a Z7 nearly into a compact camera. THAT is their magic.

I am a bit late watching this but if you are just processing the ORFs using the JPEG settings at the time of capture, and passing them straight through OMW without editing, and exporting a JPEG, why not just shoot JPEG+RAW in the first place and import the JPEGs to LR. What am I missing?
@jonneave
@jonneave 2 ай бұрын
Hey Dunk. Thanks for checking out the video. This process allows you to select JPEG settings/develop the RAW on your computer like other RAW development apps. But it hands off the processing back to the camera’s processor to speed up the RAW processing rather than relying on the computer’s processor. Does that better explain it? Best.

@@jonneave Thanks Jon, I think I missed the point. I understand that you would do this if the in-camera JPEG settings were not right at the time of capture and needed reprocessing from the RAW. If the RAW processor can recover highlights and shadows, you wonder why these tools are not present in the camera. I guess we will see in-camera RAW processing equivalent to what can be done of the PC at some stage - as computing power seems to be increasing every iteration
@jonneave
@jonneave 2 ай бұрын
@MrDunk66 Well as it happens a few camera brands allow you to process a RAW file in camera as many times and in as many ways as you like using the picture styles/picture controls that you’d select when typically shooting JPEG, using the cameras JPEG engine and saving the files to the memory card. Obviously this isn’t as flexible as a standalone editor but being able to process a RAW file in the camera a few different ways (eg flat, vivid, monotone) can be helpful when you dont have access to a computer but dont want to initially capture a JPEG. And some brands allow picture-style bracketing - think exposure bracketing but instead of adjusting the exposure automatically, you’re applying every picture style to the RAW and saving all of those files to the memory card. This could be useful in say high contrast situations for instance when having a range of styles to chose from might be helpful. Thanks again for checking out the video.

I bought this lens almost as soon as I went mirrorless with a Z7. It is small, cheap and fast. And there really isn't anything comparable that is also small, cheap and fast. I'm not sure what more really needs to be said. It stays on my Z7 most of the time because when it is on there I'm much more likely to pick it up and take it with me compared to my larger S lenses. I'm not a pixel peeper or a measure-bater so the perceived weaknesses of this lens have never been an issue for me. I have had no focus issues. Given its readily apparent limitations (cheap, light, simple design) I find this to be one of my favorite lenses. For potential buyers: Don't overthink it. Find a used one, get it, use it , enjoy it and remember if it were small, fast and perfect you probably wouldn't be able to afford it.

Hey George, thanks for checking out the video and for taking the time to comment. I think for many/most people your sentiments ring true. @@jonneave Agreed. My point is that it seems that this level of disappointment is disproportionate to the cost and design of the lens (plastic mount, six elements!). One wonders what those folks were expecting for $226 (US), new. Anyway, I appreciate the thorough review but I also think reviewers need to keep things in context. I would reference Christopher Frost's balanced review of the lens which is generally positive and concludes: "There's not much more you can ask from of lens of this price point."
@jonneave
@jonneave 2 ай бұрын
Hey George, thanks for the thoughts. I feel I explained the pros and the cons of the lens as I see them. I like Chris Frost though he is often reviewing a lens that he only has for a short while. I think this must preclude anyone from really knowing a lens the way you do if you shoot a lens over a longer period of time. I’m very much a longer focal length shooter and if I’m shooting wide, I am generally up close on my subject with the aperture wide open. When you take pictures in this manner with the 40mm f2, especially portraits, there are significant limitations. Is this unreasonable for a $300 lens, you’d have to answer that within your reference frame of value and priorities. When I initially bought the lens, I shot it a few times and thought it was disappointing. If you only shoot close up wide open, I think it would not be good value at any price. When, a year later, I used the lens further for other roles, it performs quite nicely. I think my review speaks to the overall performance of the lens and doesn’t seek to prioritize one use case over another, as I know folks have different preferences. But it’s all good that we have different preferences, priorities, perception of value and of balance. I appreciate your thoughts.

Now, not so much since there is literally no other option for a lens of similar size for that price, which, by the way, is now $226, not $300. The ancient comparable F lens is the AF 50mm 1.8 is now $130! The AF-S version is $200. When someone, maybe Sigma, maybe a Chinese company, comes out with a small light cheap fast 40mm that outperforms it, then we'd have something to compare it to. Until then, comparing it to a faster, heavier, sharper and more expensive lens is like comparing a Miata to a Ferrari. I like your reviews but if they lack context then they run the risk of lacking real world application. Would I recommend it for someone who only shoots up close and wide open? Of course not. But I would wonder why they expected such a lens to do so to begin with.

Excellent video. Gets right to the heart of the issues which need to be considered when contemplating buying this lens. I am looking to expand my kit, but I have 3 Nikon zoom lenses which cover the range from 14mm to 400mm. The 1-stop difference between f4 and f2.8 is not a good tradeoff for loss in image quality. I had been considering both this lens, and the 40mm f2, and as a result of your videos decided not to spend my money on either of them. If I am going to stick prime lens in the middle of my available zoom range, I want it to be blazingly sharp and fast.

Hey Alan, thanks for taking the time to comment and for the kind feedback. I’d guessing you have the 14-30, 24-120 (or 24-70) and 100-400? There’s definitely a trade off in size and speed between the zooms and the muffins but with the 24-70 in particular, I find the flexibility of the zoom more appealing than the smaller size of the 28mm and its one stop advantage. The 40mm does give you a couple of stops which is very useful in low light but the close up wide open performance is not good. That said, it’s nice Nikon has given us a number of options at different price points. Thanks again.

Great video! I find it gets stuck on the base plate similar to the v1 strap. Do you have any suggestions for that?
@jonneave
@jonneave 2 ай бұрын
Hey Camedia. Thanks for checking out the video. As long as the top retaining lug is retracted before you push the camera plate into the clip I found it goes in quite happily. There is enough slack around the plate and the clip that it wiggles just a little. How/where are you finding it sticking?
@Camedia74
@Camedia74 2 ай бұрын
Thanks Jon. I was finding it sticking the same way you mentioned in the video on the V1. Basically just requiring perfect alignment. Also I’m talking about the base plate that I put onto a tripod. You do make a great point that I hadn’t thought of that it makes sense to be tighter on a tripod.
@jonneave
@jonneave 2 ай бұрын
Ah, I follow! The plates that attach to a tripod are definitely tight just like the v1 backpack clip. I understand why this is but it can be awkward. I think I recently saw a glimpse of a video where the F38 plates would push down into the base rather than slide in. That way you get the benefit of a tight interface but without having to take undue care lining things up. I hope they release this type of base soon. Thanks for taking the time to comment.

Which lens should I buy,Nikon 200-500 mm f5.6 f mount lens or Tamron 150-500 mm f6.3
@jonneave
@jonneave 2 ай бұрын
I think it comes down to budget. The 200-500 can be had quite cheaply second hand but it’s a good bit larger. I’ve not tested it, but I’d guess it’s a little less sharp but plenty of people like the results of the 200-500. Thanks for checking out the video.

Sadly I dont have the 200-500. It didn’t factor into my decision to buy the Tamron 150-500 due to its larger size and it required an FTZ adapter which further increases the bulk. If I had an FTZ adapter and wanted the cheaper option, I’d have gone with the 200-500 or stuck with my old Tamron 100-400 F mount lens. Best.

should compare panny 50-200 vs Oly 40-150 f2.8 pro +mc14, that will be a better comparison, but of course the Oly pro lens are lot more heavy and also with a heavier plus the extensor weight too.

Hi James. I used to the own the 40-150 f2.8 pro lens. It’s a really nice lens. It bigger than the PL 50-200 and obviously shorter in reach, but has a fixed aperture across the focal range. I liked it a lot and was very happy to shoot it wide open at any focal length. I’m not a fan of teleconverters. I’ve had three 1.4x converters (EF, Olympus, Z Mount) and never found them useful. They decrease resolution and light gathering for little tangible benefit. Cropping the image is a cheaper way of getting to the same place while retaining a stop of light. YMMV. Thanks for checking out the video.

It looks like you have a second base mount for the F22/38 GoPro. Which one is that adapter for the F22 to fit snug on the F38?
@jonneave
@jonneave 2 ай бұрын
Hey, thanks for checking out the video. If you’re referring to around 5:50 in the video, that’s a screen grab from Ulanzi’s website. I think that set-up is a regular F38 plate screwed into the Ulanzi 2554 Falcam F22 & F38 Quick Release Ball Head for Action Camera. Per their website, it looks like the 2554 will mount directly into the v1 clip but it appears it needs the F38 plate for it to work with the v2 clip. www.ulanzi.com/products/falcam-f22-f38-quick-release-ball-head-for-action-camera-2554 Let me know if you need any further clarification. Cheers.

@jonneave funny. I came up with that idea on my own when I saw how the fit was loose. The F38 base to adapt it works great and feels secure. Too bad they discontinued their F38 Action Camera base.

The F38 action cam base would simplify it for sure. I think I have three layers of quick releases on one of my tripod/head/camera combos - I may have over thought it! Great products and versatility!
