The reason why they are used in a pair is because if you get snagged with the hook you can still attack with the other weapon. If you only have one and it hooks into your opponent you lose your ability to regain the weapon quickly leaving you open for attack if the blow was not fatal. So if you do get your sword snagged you can still attack and can regain control over your weapon and the battle.

@@Skipwulf Posture too vertical for Yin style. Inner foot should always go straight and outer foot makes circle as all bagua styles are. Should feel like falling forward on each step. Motion and release not well-integrated externally. Training this way makes internal ability impossible to get. Not saying i am high level but i know jīběngōng well and this is less than ideal at least from Ma Gui lineage.

I've been observing these videos trying to understand Bagua and something I'm wondering is the energy of the movements almost coiling and springing in nature? Its almost as if he is capturing his opponent and pulling their energy in and then releasing it back.

It is spiral, twisting energy in many movements, so yes coiling and springing could be used to describe it. However, there are also direct straight strikes. It has many facets.
