Great lesson, thank you! I was classically trained & coached to practice extra slowly to get it locked in, but then also to practice it at double speed, too. It is a great way to challenge yourself and expose any weak spots in technique or memory.

Man, just came across you, and love your vids. I'm similar in background, etc. Just had a little earthquake here in Idaho while watching your video ... wonder if it was a sign of some sort ... heh heh. Funny, this is the 2nd earthquake in the last couple years. Maybe all the peps from California are bringing their earthquakes with them ... anyway, great teaching and videos so far.

Malheureuse sounds just like Jack of Diamonds/Druken Hiccups, which like you said is played in Appalachia, and I've read a couple times now that it is "from" New England, in that form at least, I'm sure it has a history going way back. It's definitely one of my all time favorite fiddle tunes, but I think Varise's take on it really gives it a run for its money because that tuning is so beautiful. In Scandinavia they call it "troll tuning" and use it to play "the Devil's song", Fanitullen.

Mitch, where would you say the shuffle bowing technique came from? I once had a blue grass fiddler ask me but I couldn't pin point it with a single fiddler. Leo Soileau? Doc Guidry? This guy told me he didn't think Dennis McGee was a Cajun fiddler at all because he didn't have that shuffle beat, but he was thinking about Doug Kershaw and Diggy Liggy Lo, Louisiana Man. I replied that if Dennis McGee isn't Cajun fiddling then nobody is! Ha!

Is this melody over the CGF chords. I like how you play over the F chord with a 4 note chord or a double double stop. Is that terminology correct?

I've only been playing in earnest for about two months, though I've had this violin since August, and I've been able to play the first, second and third finger in tune most every time, but it's the fourth that I have trouble with, so I taped up my violin tonight. I don't go to jams, I play music just for my own, and my wife's amusement, in our lonesome, but I think if someone gets a bee in their bonnet about someone having tape on your violin, that's their problem, not yours, that they're projecting onto you, so don't let their insecurities stop you from making progress. Thank you again for your videos, I hope you do more soon, but I get that you must be busy! Your playing songs in your videos is great because I slow it down and pick some stuff up by ear, heheh.

Great points about the tape, and I’m really glad you are getting the tunes on your own 👍🏽it’s a best case scenario in my opinion - we’re both doing something right!

Hey! what a great video! Could you write here names and references of those polkas?? I'm french and could'nt understand how is called the second one?
@pelmoelmo
@pelmoelmo 6 ай бұрын
The first one is called "Polka” on Dennis McGee's album "Himself”. The second is called "New Iberia Polka". The Segura Brother's version is from 1928. I'm not sure of the 3rd song's name. The 4th song is called "Mr. Ortego's Polka" or "Ortego's Polka". There's a version on Mamou Prairie Band's "Le Holiday" album.

Thanks, Mitch! I met one of Isom Fontenot's relatives recently at our local Cajun French Table. Today he played a family video of Mr. Fontenot for me. I was blown away by how much the piece he played sounded like a fiddle playing Cajun rhythm with double stops. I'm thrilled that you shared one of his tunes. I'm off to find more!

This is a good quick explanation of what makes it sound Cajun. I was at a jam last night and a lot of those people just don't seem to know these basics. In many ways it is easier to play Cajun tunes when you know them. Plus why bothering to tune to the accordion makes more sense. Some of the best double stops etc aren't available when you play tuned standard with a C accordion. But then there is the situation I was in a while ago at Marc Savoy's where I came in and he's playing on an E accordion! A pain in the butt even standard tuned. Ha! 😃

Shit...This year is going to be ANOTHER learning year...lol. I'm 5+ years into fiddle, with space between years 2 and 3 and a broken wrist with 9 screws...yeah. Lost 8 years of Irish Flute, and 15 years of pennywhistle and 20 years bodhran with THAT motorcycle crash ! Took up guitar 3.5 years ago...playing barre chords, power chords and Travis picking now...time to rejoin my fiddle...Back to Drowsy Maggie, Morrisons jig and O'Carolans...started learning some Quebecquois, Cape Breton and New England stuff (I live in upstate NH) ...NOW CAJUN? Great!! 🤣🤣 Torturing myself...lol.

The words “fiddle” and “violin” are two names for the same stringed instrument-fiddle is just an informal way of referring to the violin. In the context of classical music, it’s typically called a violin. In a bluegrass band, it’s more likely to be called a fiddle. Technically, the word fiddle can refer to any instrument in the viol family (a family of stringed instruments that preceded the violin family). But most commonly, fiddle is simply used as an informal name for the violin.
