Hi Yrvind, when I look at 0:16 it seems like you have left the foam core exposed, am I missing something here?

I would add additional support on both sides of the tunnel to prevent bending end possible demnage because of side forces...

It will be supported by the deck, I think, more than enough.

Good work, et gravity do it. Is the rake of the dagger board slightly forward in a seaweed catching angle.?
@TJF-f5l6 сағат бұрын
What is the reason for locating the daggerboard near the bow, instead of closer to the middle of the boat? Thank you.
@boooshes6 сағат бұрын
By having an adjustable forward daggerboard, it allows him to easily adjust where the CLA is. This is very helpful when trimming the boat for different points of sail and for different sail configurations.
@TJF-f5l5 сағат бұрын
Thank you. Does that concept work for all sorts of sail configurations? Or just the kind he’s using on this boat?
@boooshes4 сағат бұрын
@TJF-f5l theoretically, all types of sail that are usually adopted. The simplist application is an adjustable centerboard or lee boards where it is easy to change the amount of board under water. Unless the centerboard is exactly in the center of a forward/aft symmetrical wetted hull area, the CLA will change some as you lower or raise the board. But having the daggerboard far forward allows much more percentage change in the overall CLA for small changes in the depth of the dagger board, making adjustment of lee/weather helm at different points of sail very easy and effective. Of course the down side is complexity, loss of storage, more lines, another hole in the boat etc. Almost nothing is free.
@TJF-f5l4 сағат бұрын
Thanks again. That explanation makes sense to me. I appreciate your help.

Looks good Sven. Depending on sailing qualities of existing keel, to be seen, i was thinking of a ballasted swing keel located at the center of lateral resistance (clr) but have limited access in my shallow draft hull and i see your daggerboard case certainly takes less space. Only wish i had your strength snd determination. Maybe, hopefully our courses will cross one day.

@SvenYrvindExlex18 сағат бұрын
Divinycell is inert so that is not needed. However I did coat it with epoxy anyway.

The advantage of divinycell is that it is inert. It does not need sealing.

I have said it before, and I am here to say it again. I love your approach to this project!. Been following along for a long time and it pleases to se how your design process works. Too many people think inside the box and lacks the ability to improvise on the spot. As most of us know, it takes a solid core of knowledge and years of experience to navigate the process like you do, truly inspiring! You have shared plenty of what you will bring in regards of provisions for your trip, however i am curious to know what books you are planning to bring. If you don't mind, can you enlighten us on you travel library? Also do you plan to bring music? Steady on!

Last voyage I had about 10 000 books on my ipad. It is much biographys, science and non-fiction also classical French litterature just to keep learning. I am not interested in music. I rather listen to my inner voice. It needs silence to be heard. After a month at sea it gets stronger.

I'd guess that you might shorten the engine by ten cm to be able to handle and store it. This as an alternative to making space in your boat. Just a thought.
@SvenYrvindExlex2 күн бұрын
Looks good as it is. The weight is only 10 kilos. I think that I can handle it. I have chosen the shortest model. I think it is a good reason that they do not make shaft shorter. A shorter shaft is cheaper to produce, cheaper to package and transport.

Seems like you have it wedged in pretty tightly. Is it going to be a struggle to get it out when needed? I remember thinking of electric propulsion for my LOLA design. Then, only lead-acid batteries were available. And solar panels were not as efficient as they are now. I calculated only a 20 mile range per full charge. And that was with eight batteries.
@SvenYrvindExlex2 күн бұрын
A 20 mile range would be fine even 5 miles

Sven, it seems like you might be getting over tired. Please consider to rest away from your boat for at least a week. I'm an old guy to, but I'm only in my 70s and I need to rest a lot. Give your mind and body a rest and then it will go better when you resume building.
@SvenYrvindExlex3 күн бұрын
Why do you think so. People age differently. I do not think you are right. Use it or lose it. The only way to get energy is by using energy, not by resting.

I think it is possible to generate electricity with it as well... especially in the high wind areas you likely encounter.... but takes some work, hydrofans and Kort nozzles, etc.. not simple but certainly possible.

Some of those electric trolling motors are freshwater only, glad to see you got the salt water rated one 👍
@boooshes4 күн бұрын
The thing that eats you up with these systems is effiency losses. They stack up quickly. If you've got 400 watts effective of panels, that's about 1/2 hp input, or 4 hours charging for 1 hour of 2hp motor. 80% efficiency for charging and 80% for discharge and some motor loss will halve the energy conversion again, so you are at 8hours charging for 1 hour at 2 hp. This also puts a significant requirement on battery storage. For continuous real time use, you need to get 1500 watts (after losses) to get 2 HP, so you probably need 3000 watts. I use 2HP because that's a guess of the usable horsepower you would need for the vessel. Just kicking around some numbers. I'd like to have the option if I were you. I'd keep the motor under cover like you plan to do. Thanks for the update. Just checked - that motor has a maximum current draw of 50 Amps. So 600 Watts. Maybe 500-1000 watts of panels would work fine.
@SvenYrvindExlex3 күн бұрын
I do not need 2 hp, I think 0.2 hp be fine in calm water propelling the boat faster than the oar
@boooshes3 күн бұрын
@SvenYrvindExlex indeed, for good conditions, you will be able to make a couple of knots for small power. Over a long period, this can make a big difference. I am glad you have the motor. Trial trips will tell a lot. Best to you and your project.

...good idea about separating the control module. You could then attach the prop to the boomkin and just lower as needed ..no need for lifting and moving engine around.
