I show in the bench results that these Rockchip devices can't match anything in a smart phone. It is a pitty. But smart phone's sell more for a higher price. So the SoCs cost a lot more and are often missing some nice features Rockchip does have. Like PCIe/NVMe/SATA... There are Mediatech SoC's now that should be more powerful. RK3588 should be great for Android, just OPi is an awful company in software support.

From all that I have seen from the SOC, this will become popular in TV boxes, where is seems to be partly geared towards media consumption. The GPU clearly tells us that whilst we still have the interminable wait for the power of the RK3588 to be realised, using an older GPU in the RK3576 that will have better Linux support will fill in a gap It may even turn out to be an up front but subtle admission that the RK3588 is another RK3399 lemon. Good to see Android 14, also missing (13 too) on RK3588. Armbian and Ubuntu will likely see early stable and more fully functional releases.

Collabora released Panthor, the OpenGL driver for the RK3588 GPU. I have seen mixed reports about it, but it's all brand new. I think Collabora also said they are working on Vulkan. There is also an open-source driver for the NPU of the RK3588, so it doesn't look like the RK3588 will turn out to be a lemon.

This has the same large cores (A72) and roughly the same performance as a Raspberry Pi 4. They'll need to price it pretty aggressively if they want a large market for it. Maybe they have a special niche of customers that it was designed for.
@NicoDsSBCs
@NicoDsSBCs 28 күн бұрын
The SoC is a lot cheaper than RK3588, so the boars are cheaper too. Mekotronics aren't the best priced boards and they do have customers they design these for. There are others that have RK3576 boards. Like Radxa's Rock5C. They said it would start at 35euro but it's 45euro for 2GB version. Still have to install Linux. I'll learn a lot more about the CPU cores there. Cheers.

The lack of maturity and all round performance of the RK3588, after all this time is pitiful. The introduction of the Radxa X4, with the Intel N100 may well shake things up and decimate the RK3588 and even RPI5 market, especially as this move will almost force other manufacturers to put out similar and expanded products.
@NicoDsSBCs
@NicoDsSBCs Ай бұрын
N100 needs active cooling so makes noise. Consumes 3-4x more than RK3588. Is a lot less powerful CPU wise. Only for gaming N100 is better. I know what I choose...

You don't need the extra 4 pins! You can plug a 20 pin into a 24 pin socket no problem, and it'll work 99% of the time. The extra 4 pins are almost always just wired in parallel to other 12v and ground pins. Check continuity between the extra 4 pins and other 12v/0v if you would like to confirm. Losing the extra wires would be a problem on an Intel 14900k, but for the amount of amps that Rock-5-ITX is pulling it makes literally no difference. Edit: My apologies, it's a +12v, +5v, +3v3 and ground that you get. Doesn't matter, you still don't need them.

@@NicoDsSBCs It’s end of life so I guess I can’t complain too much. Purchased Radxa’s RockPi 4c NAS bundle. It includes the SATA hat and case. Found that the support for the fan/display never gets updated. So it would restrict me from using anything beyond Bullseye. Which is an issue in itself. I’ve tried almost every option available for bullseye. Almost every time I go to install ZFS. There’s an issue. Either the headers don’t install or the ZFS module does not get properly build. Too many caveats. I recently bought a Raspberry Pi 4. Zero issues installing bookworm and ZFS.

Don’t get me wrong. I am sure if I jumped into their forums. I would probably get some direction. But at the end of the day. When I buy a product I want it to work. It’s DIY yes but one has but so much time to be troubleshooting and such.
@NicoDsSBCs
@NicoDsSBCs Ай бұрын
@@joseroman6484 It indeed is DIY. I'm always able to make my stuff work, but have to put lot of time into it. In Linux a lot is build for one version what makes it brake in later versions. I think the info you need is to be found on radxa forum. These days armbian focuses on the more modern boards and had to drop support for a lot older ones since there are just too many devices on the market. And nobody is paying for supporting these devices. RK3588 is what is hot these days. But as with all arm devices it is never problem free. It's all a work in progress. For me that's what attracts me, but I understand many people want trouble free easy installation. Greetings.

you're supposed to peel off the 3M double-sided tape film and that side sticks to the motherboard bottom. You installed it upside down. Had you installed it correctly, the 4 nuts of the plate act as standoffs creating like a 1-2mm space between it and the board. It likely shorted out.
@NicoDsSBCs
@NicoDsSBCs Ай бұрын
I indeed put the backplate backwards. But that's not what created the problem. It works with ATX PSU so the issue is in the barrel jack power circuit. I noticed I put the backplate on wrong, checked the board and there's no damage and nothing there that can be damaged.

The SBC, like the software for the RK3588, so far own the line, still very much broken and incomplete. A fitting metaphor.
@suntoryjim

2:26 I think that heatsink backing plate is installed upside down. The 3M sticky tape is supposed to fasten the plate to the motherboard to hold it in place to facilitate removal and re-installation of the heatsink. As a test, completely remove the heatsink and backing plate and then try to power on the board without it.
@dmckrk
@dmckrk Ай бұрын
I'm quite sure You damaged SoC installing this heatsink. Bottom plate have some spacers to not touch the board, You probably installed it up to down, but that was not the main issue. Screws should be tightened GENTLY in diagonal order, You did not do that. Then at the end You decided TO SHAKE whole thing holding by radiator probably destroying some pads under SoC. When it heats up - it died. Before heatsink installation it worked without problems for several days? :( :( :(

I can't comment on your device, might be a bad batch or just incompatible with IPhone charging. What is very important using these is having good cables.
