I would call that a turning saw. Ancestor of the modern coping saw.

That kind of saw is all over the world. I know them in German as Spannsäge or Gestellsäge, but you also find those in China as example. I seen versions of it in Europe, Africa and Asia, though in America you don't find those and you din't find them in Japan.

is there an alternative for nail as an eye?
@whittle_with_rik17 күн бұрын
I was just going to carve an eye, but didn’t think it would stand out as much. I was thinking a nice stone/pebble but then would have to glue it, so decided on the nail. Thanks for the comment 👍🏻

I had no idea that burnishing with a rock could make such a difference to a piece like this. wow. That is super freaking cool.
@whittle_with_rik19 күн бұрын
When I first hear the term used I was like “what the hell does that mean” and then started to googling immediately 😂 but in all seriousness it’s brilliant and if you make great cuts and burnish after you don’t need to use sandpaper 👍🏻 thanks for the comment!

Nice! Great video, and I have some constructive criticism. People will watch this and get inspired; you need to inspire them to work safely. You are clearly an expert, but showing how to work safely is important. (Made me nervous around the mouth bit, and if it were me I'd press too hard and cut my thumb off.) Also constructively, i think there's a way to change the camera settings to not see flickering lights. Lovely outcome on the project and agreed, the sanding was very satisfying. Cheers!

The hardest part is finding wood that will whittle in the way you've shown here... how and where to find?!
@whittle_with_rik28 күн бұрын
When I first started whittling I was using dry wood that would chip,split and was so very difficult to carve. Freshly wood is great, still full of moisture. This wood I’m using is Hazel grows in a lot of hedge rows all over the UK , it is a hard wood and grows straight a lot of people use them to make walking sticks. I asked my local nature reserve if I could have any leftovers from felling trees or tiding up they had done. Hope this helps
