Oh wow, this clip brings back many memories. I recognise many people from drivers I worked with to enthusiasts and organisers of the trips and all. I was a fireman in Kimberley at the time and on the start of the festival loco inspector Pat Abbott and myself brought up all the engines to Kimberley station. In your photo I am on the green class 6 nearest your camera chatting to others on the footplate. All these engines and people were my life for many years. That's also me waving from the class 6 as we departed the station. I really enjoyed this clip, thanks for posting

Thanks for the kind comments. I am pleased that you were able to recognize yourself and former colleagues in the video film. By posting this on KZbin before I myself go to the "Great locomotive scrapyard in the sky" I have hopefully ensured the footage will out-survive me. Unfortunately for so many others who share my hobby, taking photograohs and films of trains, when they pass away their work ends up in a rubbish skip because few poeople now have the TV equipment for playing back old VCR tapes.

this very steam train is part of War department/ministry of supplies, (WD for short) and it is called an austerity 2-8-0, i'd wish they kept those and didnt throw them away into the middle east

Well, like you told me, one is well and truly persevered in the U.K. , also there are also at least eight other cousin-brothers or cousin-sisters who are like the WD Austerity 2-8-0. They are the WD Austerity 2-10-0, which three of them are now in U.K. , while others are staying around the other countries. Despite they have longer wheelbases, they have got the same traction force and a lighter axle load compared to the WD 2-8-0, as well as having interchangeable parts, making it able to travel on secondary lines.

Great old days of steam. Working on those locomotives was some of the best days of my life. With an extremely enthusiastic driver as John Gilberthorpe as my regular driver on and our own regular 25NC no 3488 it was just fantastic to say the least. Looking at your clip, right at 36min 30sec are 3 guys standing with their backs towards you. The chap in the Spoornet overalls certainly looks like myself. I may have been showing the photographers around the shed or such. Thanks so much for posting

@@Chinarail1 Once Kimberley steam ended I worked steam for a few years in movies but finally ended up at Voorbaai working the tour trains over Montagu and the Knysna line until I returned to Scotland where I am still driving hi speed trains out of Edinburgh. I then turned to building live steam models and now have a collection of 6 SAR machines. Last Feb we had a parade of steam day with all my engines in steam. Thanks for the kind comments. Much more encouraging than the previous post from Conor Graaf complaining that the video clips are "disjointed'. It was never intended to be documentary but I thought these filmed records of "steam" days gone by should be available for public viewing rather than disappearing for ever without trace when the origional video tapes are thrown out in a dump truck after my demise. There was quite a lot of effort ( and expense) getting these old videotapes converted to digital format, then edited and uploaded but all some of these youngsters can do is repond with a comment "a bit disjointed" .......

Whenever the Chinese (HK people) British Army, named TORPEDO ARMY from Shek Kong mostly, enjoyed or danced in the Ballrooms, There must a fight with Police force guys, well-known as Golden Fountain in Causeway Bay, the army sometimes had to show the cops the weapons on their military trucks , how crazy and deeply disliked each other. That’s happened in HK side, Kowloon side? Queen’s Ballroom happened quite often, but without the military trucks parked outside the ballroom. The army had never worried any consequences no matter what happened, they would be treated as light as possible, like doing the laundry, not allowed to go out for 2 weeks--- something like that, they were spoiled and under protection. They wore the sandal-like shoes when going out, cops saw them on the streets or in the ballrooms, then kept an eye on them as something might begin soon.
