I loved Marilyn whe he realeased this back in the day one of my fave records ( and my grandma love him too ..dont ask me why as OBV she was from a different era attitude wise ....and i was SURPRISED whe she said she liked him ..BUT i suppose it was the same thing with Boy george and Visage too ....at that time yes they came across as andrginous ect an efect of the the blitz cub / kids so folks didnt find it threatening as them all saying upfront "im gay ect" it was the 80s and you could do that as long as recording artist didnt come out as gay but could get away with how Marylin,george ect looked as it was without being rude most saw it as a novelty at the time and did not relise artistes like this WERE pushing the bounderies so that current artist such as sam smith , and actors can do what they do in this day and age and it's all of the back of pioneers such as Maryiln , boy george ect! ) as a teen i was 13 at the time also loved boy George and culture club too ! At that time aged 13 i wasn't sure of my sexuality ect ..BUT HAD an idea lol i didnt come out till i was 18 (but had a good idea before) .... UNFORTUNATLY THAT was in 1988 and we still had the panic of aids and the awfull "dont die of ignorance" gov campaign when ever houshold got that leaflet shoved through thier letterbox! .....i had a tough time with coming out i got told i had a 2 weeks to sort myself out or leave ....i left with nowhere to go and sofa surfing on friends (and my auties settee she was gay friendly and went to our local gay club THAT at 18 to 30 i ended up working at 1st as a cloakroom attendant ..then worked my way up , bar ect then ended up doing drag shows as part of a team and DJ ) BUT in the end i had to return home and lie EVEN though my folks KNEW i was working at the club but i just said its a job and as for me doing the drag i said it's just like wearing a uniform and at the end of the show i took it all off and wore jeans and a t shirt ect ...MY parents knew but never said anything ...it wasnt until i reached my 30s that they accepted a BF but he turned out to be a total ***** ...SO it wasnt till i met my current partner of 18 yrs in 2005 and moved from Greater manchester to bristol my family accepted it all ...now they are great with my partner even my nices and nephews call him uncle! I still love calling your name and marylin AND as im a dj that does mixes if i do an 80s one i ALLWAYS try to slip it into the mix! as its still one of my fave 80s tracks in the uk from growing up! SORRY FOR MY LONG COMMENT BUT on a personal note from me who grew up in the UK at that time and usure of himself ect they were all icons to me whe i didnt have many to latch onto apart from the sterotypica awfull tv CAMP OF MR HUMPHRIES OR DANNY LA RUE ECT!
