@adriannash2705 Hi Adrian, she does, she is called Evening Star no 92220. The loco is a fully operational model of the real loco currently at the National Railway Museum in York UK. Thanks for the comment 👍

@adriannash2705 Ah great stuff! I too have 00, just bought a 9F too! I am very lucky to have been able to have the 5 inch gauge locos, tools and the ability to operate and build them, at times it is difficult but very rewarding 😀

@adriannash2705 in 5 inch I have the 9F which I have rebuilt and replaced some parts on, I also have a Manor loco I'm completely rebuilding from a part built project and a 15 xx Speedy I am building from a chassis part built. It's in my videos. Cheers

@julias-shed Thanks Julia, yeah pretty spot on I think, took a few runs to settle the valve and piston rings in once I had the Die blocks sorted out. She sounds the same in reverse too!

@JohnRich1415 Thanks John and glad you like the content, if you ever fid feel the urge to 'up scale' then some or maybe all your 7mm scale skills would transfere, I for one am keen to look at building some coaches in 5 inch but the only source of building info for coaches is Gauge 1 that I have seen so far.

@@garybrown593 Gauge 1 to 5 inch coaches I am assuming could be the same process but scaled up with sturdier materials that 5 inch would demand, be interesting to see how you get on with that project.

​@JohnRich1415 it's the closest I can find for reference material for the building, I have drawings for the bogies in 5 inch already. The best source of information so far is the Gauge 1 Handbook for coaches, a worthwhile read!

@julias-shed Hi Julia, very comfortable actually for the footpegs, need to put a pad on the seat but again pretty comfortable. I was worried it might be a bit cramped up but is fine so far!

Enjoyed your video. Hope you're not bothered by my noticing your shaking hands. I suppose I noticed because I'm another who has spent a lifetime working with his hands and wound up with the same kind of 'shakes'. Not much to be done about it IMHO but I know it does occasionally upset observers. Mark Presling is a well-known KZbinr and 'fellow traveler'.

@kevintheilen9643 Hi Kevin, yes I do have shakes hands always had and apologies its come through on the videos. I was once told by my RAF Doctor to have a shot of sherry in a flask at work if it ever got too bad 🤣 not sure that would have gone down too well with my superiors however! Key thing is yes they do shake but I still enjoy working with my hands so do it anyway. Cheers 🍻

Nice to see your intro Gary 😀 a suggestion with your layout it looked like the milling machine tooling was furthest from the mill? I’ve been trying to organise tools into workstations so all the tooling is near the tool! The Japanese call it 5S, Adam Savage also has some great ideas too. Not a criticism just something I’m trying to improve myself 😳

Gary how long did it take you to make this ? in the 60's my dad used to take me to the railway show at Derby loco works as he worked there and his friend had built o model like yours and was giving rides to kids going down the yard past 8 shop brings back memory's seeing that mate 😁😁🤘🤘

@karlalton3170 I didn't build it from scratch as I just don't have that sort of time but I must have spent 50+ hours since I got her just sorting bits out already! At our club there is a chap who has a 5 inch loco built at Derby works! An 080 Black loco with tender, I wonder if it is the same one??

@@garybrown593The guy my dad worked with would be in his late 70's now i guess as my dad was older than him and he would be 90 now if he was still alive , the chaps name who ran it and built it was a guy called Len Smith from Ambergate .

On my Britannia, the foot pegs are hinged so they fold away under the underside of the tank, if something happens to clip the pegs they just fold back away, where as screw in type like yours could cause derailments, just a thought. Love the 9F as well, 👍

@johncrosssteam Hi John, now you tell me 😅. That is a very good idea, the foot pegs are within the Sourthern and GL5 standards so hopefully they are OK for most lines, had her (9F) around the track today testing the tender out, will get a video up at some stage.

@@garybrown593 Thanks. That makes sense now! The new dies were an enormous improvement and with sorted valve timing it will be as smooth as the full sized version!

@jonathanparle8429 there is a few shorts on there of her running around, I also believe one of the valves was blowing by a bit but that seems to have settled after some long steady runs, the work to fix the lubricator has also helped her alot.

@tonydewey3023 Thanks Tony, full disclosure I did not build this one but am building a 5 inch Manor, similar size wise and that's taken 3 years so far. Also must have spent 30+hours on this easily since purchase just sorting things out, they are resource sponges but very worthwhile ones I think!

@@haroldpearson6025 She was both! The loco had been the previous owners third "go to" loco due to her size, so she needed a bit of work to the motion and some running in (see the other videos) air wise it always takes more air than you think! Steam has a much better expansion rate

@@garybrown593 Hi, thanks for the response. I have built 7 live steam locos of various gauges. I remember running the chassis of a 3.5 in gauge Juliet on my 3hp compressor. The loco brought the compressor to a standstill. One tip, it's a mistake to have very close tolerances on running parts such as con and coupling rods and valve gear components.

​@haroldpearson6025 Most of my steam experience is standard gauge although I am also building a 5 inch gauge Manor. Yes making them too tight is easily done, especially given the need for parts to expand with heat etc. I have had to re-work some of the components such as the die blocks. Things need to be close and smooth not tight.

With 2 of the axles unsupported the different centres of the connecting rods will cause tightness. Good fun though

What an absolute beauty. everything in life needs a tweak. You will get it right.. Even the great Fred had a port problem which with a few burs it was fixed. People like to say they know best. In the end it’s al fixable and so well done…

Yes mine got better when run in but I didn’t have piston valves but the square siding type which run in better than piston valves I have a GWR king in 7.25 gauge with piston valves it leak like a anything hope it get better when run in my mate that built engines over night told me to put metal polish in with the oil on a new engine not sure about that

I remember my 7.25 in 14xx class tank sounded exactly the same as your when first run valve timing and tight bearings in the rods but after much running things did get better

That's partly what has happened with this one, it's had pistons, valves and liners all made in cast iron and was not the previous owners "go to" loco so had not run a great deal.. see her running around the track etc in my other videos for the changes

Thanks Joel, you do get a fair amount of that sort of thing in this and most hobbies as I'm sure you already know. I just like being a part of the hobby and make my own mind up about people and their level of "knowledge". Just keep learning and improving is the key.

I fitted two lubricators . The way Winson did it with only one does not guarantee equal feed to each cylinder. Sounds much better.

@Stoomraider I also have another lubricator to fit to her, it's been OK so far but it's clear that any disruption to oil flow effects these locos alot.
