Russians don't understand that they cannot do this. And as long as the international community allows this, they will not come to understand either. Meanwhile, Russia's neighbors and the colonized peoples fight for their right to exist year after year, decade after decade, century after century.

The same exact history "soft invasion" exist between iran and afghanistan , even the name "iran" has been used to describe afghanistan with some part of east todays iran, to the extend that the main ppl of iran were outside of it, and in history we readsometimes whole iran was part of afghanistan, and now the same exact strategy : "We iranians and afghans were united under a magestic persian empire" !!! I was shocked when i saw this video , super similar !!!

Ok, I got to Mike Johansen but I still have not heard what is wrong with Tolstoy and Dostoyevski or Chekov for that matter apart from a great literature being an imperial weapon. I do agree that it is the case but you have failed to reveal how.

All empires do the same. The British Empire did the same thing around the globe while plundering and enslaving colonies and the UK still pushes its narrative of the benefits of the empire and denying the darkside.

Also Stalin definitely wasn’t the angel however some facts about Holodomor still lacking the accuracy due to hate however before Hitler’s Germany Polish were the big invaders of the Europe. And after WW1 they took a big chunk of Belarus where they didn’t treat civilians like their own , it wasn’t good. So Stalin had in mind to simply take back these territories and yet Belarus still lost Białystok region, not sure why Stalin didn’t take that back .. so it’s inaccurate to say that Stalin wanted it to divide Poland with Hitler , Stalin wanted to take back territories belonged to Belarussian people and calm down the long term European abuses and invader - Poland ! And Stalin gave to Ukraine part that Poland took by force 20 years earlier too.

The author of this video is great grand daughter of Hitler collaborators, and so the Canadian historian because that’s where they flew after the war because USSR was prosecuting such a battalions since they were the ones to do the dirty jobs in Belarus - killing as many civilians as possible by burning alive in a fire. Western Ukraine belongs in Europe -that’s true!

Wonderful review, thank you. I know very little Soviet era Russian lit outside of Solzhenitsyn and Bulgakov. Of course the Soviets used mediocre writer that were politically acceptable. I also appreciate the position that Russian literature has been used for empirical purposes and they certainly punch below their weight compared to Ireland, Persian Colombia, etc, and Pushkin and Gogol were tools of the government, but Dostoevsky, Tolstoy(even Sevastopol) and Chekhov’s short stories (never got why people love his plays, though) are truly jewels in the crown of humanity.

I think the "good Russian authors" might have had solid reasons for denying their support/funding to the "Freedom of Russia Legion". Being against the war and the Russian invasion is one thing, but supporting a force of right-wing extremist is quite another. Michael Clarke, a visiting professor of war studies at King's College London, said in May 2023: "It's clear that Freedom of Russia Legion and Russian Volunteer Corps are both predominantly Russian groups - self-styled 'partisans' trying to bring the Putin government down and that they range from the soccer-thug neo-Nazis to the wannabe celebrities and even to some semi-serious political reformers. They are not 'liberals' but rather hard-line Russian nationalists - just not of the Putin variety.” Lots of interesting and worthwhile points made in this video.. but that is the kind of stuff you miss if you are wearing nationalist blinders.
