It's not a real M65 jacket, i mean 1) it's made in China (no offense) 2) I am wearing M65 for a hell long time. The original was invented by Alpha Industries - and at Nam times, being build by more than like 7-10+ contractors, of the US military, different firms. For instance, Proper, Golden MfG, and so on...I have 2 olive green original Alphas, one OG-107, one blue, two black Alphas, one Helikon-Tex M65 in black (closest to original), two Brandit M65 from Brandit standard black, and one M65 Giant here into black, also from Brandit. And also a standard military issue from Alpha Industries, woodland, from 1985.

I'd live to get hold of an original olive green one
@marcp.17523 ай бұрын
@@WorldSurvivalist Of all the M65 replicas (...and there are (almost) as many of them as sand on the sea...to exaggerate...) the Helikon-Tex is the best, I'll tell you why: 1) The classic M65 style has been adopted 1:1, the company has licensed this, I have read. 2) The liner for cold days is already included. 3) The field jacket costs less than 100 bucks! 4) I have several Alphas, original military issue, as well as the “counterfeit”, from Alpha Industries itself, i.e. no G.I. release. The Helikon is top in terms of price/performance, no Brandit, Rothco or whatever comes close, period. You can also buy a Proper, Cockpit, Real McCoy, or original Alpha, plus the liner for the latter. What they all have in common is that they cost a few hundred bucks. I have the helikon in black, soon also olive green. Plus about 7 more M65s, some Alphas underneath, also Brandit, etc.
@marcp.17523 ай бұрын
...and i've forgot to mention, that the helikon is not only cheap into contrast to some other brands, but the quality of the fabric, the quality of the seams is really good. Much better - than one would expect for just a 100 bucks (or less...).

No more - nowadays! Alpha doesn't produce the standard military issue for a hell long time. What you can get - is the "heritage" version, without liner, nowadays - and at least into europe, you pay some 220+ bucks for it, plus extra tons of cash for the Alpha Liner - it's not included, anyway. Nowadays, made in China, quality is by no means anything close, to the original standard military issue. I have two green ones, one made into USA, the other one Fabric made into the USA, but build (sewed) together in China - go figure! If you look at the polish firm Helikon-Tex, they're very popular, they've licensed the original US M65 classic design - and comes with an incl. Liner - all for less than 100 EUR, compared to the Alpha, go figure ! Nowadays, you pay more for the (fashion) brand name Alpha, never for it's quality. Any 20 bucks standard military issue M65 (from whatever brand being made) is better, than a >200 bucks M65 new.

It's too bulky and not very stealthy mate. And way too overpriced for what it is. I think Ohuhu or one of them Chinese no-brand ones for a tenner, would be a better option - still too bulky for me though. You can use 2 cans and a multitool to make one for free, and it would be much lighter and less bulky. Depends what your needs and environment are really. Sometimes all you need is to boil a Crusader cup (750ml), and in 15min burn time you can cook up a whole hearty meal.
@WorldSurvivalist7 ай бұрын
Its relatively easy to pack as it basically thr size of a small billy can. So if yiur doing a trip that you have a pot like that anyway its no more space. It is actually far more stealthy than a similar size fire as it burnt far more efficiently. A few people have talked about coffee can type burgers. This is not thr same thing, its not just a can you burn in its double walled with air intakes and outlets to alow for a second gasification burn. You don't get that by putting holes in a can. It is over priced tho I'll give you that.
@garenkarapetian7097 ай бұрын
@@WorldSurvivalist I’m well aware what a wood gas burning stove is. What I meant by saying it’s bulky, there are other gasification stoves that can be obtained for like £10-£20 which are the same volume as yours, but pack in half the size. Have a look at Ohuhu - they’ve been around for more than 10 years. But there are even more compact ones out there. I guess “stealthy” is a relative and subjective term. I don’t have a Billy can in my setup (no space for it) - just a Crusader cup.

What is it you are disagreeing with? Plenty of people have used all the tools you mention in different tropical environments, they each have a use and place depending on ecology and intended function. The thing about researching subjects such as this is you fall on the body of work others have done to make an informed choice. You Don't have to personally run your own experiment every time you want gear or information. Knowledge is what guides me to obtaining the best gear for my future tasks. It would be ridiculous to take everything just so I could run my own experiments. I'm fairly sure I can also choose and recommend the best sled to take to Antarctica. Yet I've never been. Plenty of people have however and there Knowledge is passed on. Thanks for watching

A very good presentation -- thanks! I believe the evidence shows how vastly underrated the modular pack system is (this is currently the 2nd comment @ < 1K views). I'm old enough to have used everything from aluminium framed backpacks, to internal fiberglass framed rucksacks, to day packs and lumbar bags. The first thing that experience has shown is how poorly hip belts distribute weight from the shoulders in carrying a backpack, especially when the terrain varies from the level and flat. The second issue is the exquisite difficulty in striking a balance between adequate preparation and accessibility. Independent of the specific contents of a hip pack, pocket kit, or backpack -- the modularity of such a layered system addresses both. To the military user, modularity invites an easier competence and flexibility without excessive duplication. For a civilian, freedom of movement without sacrifice of readiness is very attractive. Most users will appreciate some features of both perspectives -- so much so, that I believe the future of outdoor gear and systems will be increasingly tailored to this mode of carrying.
@WorldSurvivalist9 ай бұрын
Thanks for your reply, and yes I 100% agree with you on your observations, it is something I'm begging to see enter the civilian market for sure and it will be interesting to see how they spin it to look new and inactive to the hiking marker. watch this space for apparent ultra-light hip belts.
@robertphillips939 ай бұрын
@@WorldSurvivalist Recently Endurance Room on YT reviewed a couple of hip packs from Savotta that are due to be restocked soon. The larger Askare, at about 7L but without the side bottle pouches, looks pretty interesting to me. My current lumbar bag from Granite Gear is about 5L total, including side net pouches but w/o shoulder harness (but has a detachable slingstrap). Separate first aid, water carry and filtration, and shelter/clothing components can be added on the belt or in a small vest harness style pack. Also relatively new is a slightly larger hip pack by Spiritus Systems, designed to carry a full-sized service weapon and other gear. But that's a narrow view of survival gear, even though it may be highly significant for some conditions. Keep up the good work!

Have had mine for a few years. Yeah, the sleeves are too long and there's no way to roll them up neatly. I hate the various patches on the chest and especially the chevrons on the sleeve which are conspicuously absent from all marketing material. The chevrons show exactly nowhere on any website selling this jacket, not even on Brandit's own website. The fabric has disappointed me a bit. Managed to snag a side pocket on something and the fabric, not the seam, tore. The upside is that it's warm. Been using it down to -28C without the liner and it's been warm enough as such. I once used the liner with a thin windbreaker at -15C and it was way too warm. Not often you can say that.

Yeah I've had it a good bit of time now. Much thr same as you I think its warm but with not much more going for it.
