Yes, it's possible to embroider letters on velvet. Do make sure a stabilizer for easy stitching Or you can use stick and stitch stickers

Such a cute idea! How do you keep the book corner from getting caught in the stitches? Is it fine not being covered?

It's ok not being covered. However, if there are clumsy loose threads on the backside of the finished work, you could use net fabric underneath, so the book corner doesn't get caught up
