I noticed you went clockwise and counter-clockwise with the wheel. Is that typical for making pots like this?

I'm taking a pottery class this year and it's interesting to see the techniques used by this man in the video. I would've never thought of cutting part of the base and using it as a cool at the start. Really informational and this helped me learn a lot. Thank you!

What type of glaze is used to get that traditional chocolate color on Onggi pots?
@AdamFieldPottery4 жыл бұрын
It's a mix of iron rich clay and wood ash.

@@AdamFieldPottery The dark brown is so beautiful! I tried making such a glaze myself, but mine turned out more yellowish. I guess I need a clay with an higher iron content. If I may ask, at what temperature do you burn these to still have a "breathing vessel" that let's gas through it's pores. I'm trying to go below 1200 celsius around 1180 but can't get the glaze to work yet. Anyway great work! And would be nice to hear your opinion.

Hi Jason, I welcome visitors to my studio by appointment as I don't have a retail shop with regular hours. If you're planning to be in the area please feel free to drop me a line with a few days notice and I'll be happy to show you around the studio. Also, I make my Onggi jars to order and rarely have available stock on hand for purchase. Please feel free to reach out by email if you would like to place an order.

I remember making a coiled up pot at school about 45 years ago, I used a wood stick to knock the thing into shape as it revolved on a cast iron turn table, and really liked how you could alter the shape, sort of like a cross between metal forging and panel beating. I notice this potter actually uses a dolly inside the pot similar to how a panel beater does panel repairs. I like the korean style, very physical and tactile and not always circular or symmetrical
